More than 100 years ago, the fifth earl of Lonsdale, Hugh Lowther, organized the first boxing championship where the fighters wore boxing gloves. He was the first president of the National Sporting Club in England. He was an outstanding personality and a great sport fan. He was fond of the yellow colour and therefore was named "the yellow earl". In the 1930s he was president of the Arsenal football club of London, which is the reason why they play with yellow shirts as visitors. From those historical roots, Lonsdale became a brand that represents sportswear as well as casual wear, which they started to produce in the 1960s and 1970s.
