I agree with the positive points of A Farmer and temper the negative. I was using this book to teach a child at home and so having to work out the answers was quite a useful process for us both (most are readily found in the preceding teaching texts if you read it properly). Compared to the modern syllabi being taught at school, this is a much, much better course. Not having seen the Collins book I can't comment, but if you can do chemistry, this is a very good book to use.

We are a homeschooling family of three children and have copies of three of Jim Clark's IGCSE/GCSE chemistry books and this is the worst of the three. It is so obviously a cut-and-paste of the earlier GCSE book, is not in any sensible-to-teach order, there are no answers, some of the questions make you want to scream and anyway, Mr Clark's new book is stunning, so why buy this one? This book is also for an IGCSE chemistry specification which has its LAST exam in January 2011. I used this old book with my eldest, then got a third of the way through it with our second child (who takes the exam in January 2011) until the new book landed on the doorstep. There was no turning back; no comparision. Buy the new book. I can't see anything missing from the new that isn't in the old specification. Apologies to anyone trying to sell their old books.
Old GCSE book: GCSE Chemistry (Longman GCSE Science)
IGCSE book I am reviewing here: Longman Chemistry for IGCSE
New (and best) IGCSE book: Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry Student Book

Complete rubbish as no answers in the book and no access to answers online through Pearsons as this book is so old. This book should not be available to buy for this reason. Complete waste of money.

I do not recommend you buy this book if you are studying for the Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry specification. This book is incredibly unhelpful. I have found that the paragraphs are far too long to keep you focused, it is very easy to get distracted because it is so incredibly boring. I used to enjoy Chemistry, but this book has made me hate it. I've had to slap myself round the face many times because I find myself drifting off out of sheer boredom.

Another major disadvantage is that the book doesn't provide answers. A lot of people, like myself, are doing IGCSE at home, without going to a school or college to be taught it, so I found it ridiculous that not one single answer is provided.

There are also no mock exams provided within this book, meaning I had to print all of them off from the Edexcel website. It also does not provide enough tips for the Paper 3 alternative to coursework, there are just a few pages at the end, totally useless tbh.

Luckily I had use of the internet and library books to combine with it, but this book was a complete waste of money. Don't buy it, for your sake or for the sake of your child.

I am so frustrated. As a private candidate studying on my own really really could do with the answers to the questions in th ebook so I could self study with more confidence.
