I couldn't put this down. It wasn't what I was expecting. To be honest I didn't really know what I was expecting, but this turned out to be a well written, beautiful story encompassing suspense, romance and the paranormal (the latter in a more believable than unbelievable manner). The characters in the book were wonderful and whilst I suspected I knew the path the story may take on a couple of occasions, I was only half right in my guess. A brilliant free download that I would have happily paid for and can thoroughly recommend. Shall definitely read more from this author.

This book was actually posted in The Book Club as it was currently free on Amazon for the kindle.

The story see's Joy moving back to her roots years after an accident that killed her best friend Jenny. Joy buy's the house that Jenny and her family used to live in and a lot of strange incidents start to occur. The storyline has a mystery/suspense feel about it and even though the few twists towards the end didn't knock my socks off I still enjoyed the book.

The relationship between Joy and Jeff is enjoyable to read and they are both likeable characters that you soon start to care about.

If you like a book with suspense/mystery but on a slower scale I think you will enjoy this book, certainly made a nice change to all the fast paced thrillers I've read lately. Will certainly keep my eye out for more by this author.

An unusual book - proper mix of genres. A romance but with an element of mystery and one of ghostly-ness (in a subtle way; no daft floating ghosts or anything). The characters - both the main ones and the others - were well developed. The mystery was very well done - while in part the answer was obvious to everyone except Joy, in other ways it was surprising, and there was a great twist at the end. I stumbled upon this by accident and read it as a freebie, but would like to read more by Edie Claire.

I think the most important thing about this book is to note that it is of a particular genre which isn't necessarily obvious to the reader, particularly a UK one. It has a kind of Mills and Boon quality about it, most notably: it is a romance where the male lead is a handsome doctor; you can see it all coming a long way off (it is predictable); there is no sex; even when the characters are upset or angry, we still get a detailed account of their furniture and what they had for lunch; and the characters are not sufficiently well drawn for the reader to truly care about (the dog was the most interesting character). The book started off rather edgily but got more and more pedestrian as it went along. I know that many people like the cosy predictability of this kind of novel and I am guessing that Edie Claire can churn these out without too much soul searching. It isn't high art, it's a marketable product. So, if you like that kind of thing you will like this. If you don't, then you won't.

The story is about Joy who leaves her hometown following the tragic death of her best friend Jenny to escape her guilt and only returns reluctantly 18 years later due to her father's ill health. She sets up a VET's practise and unfortunately she runs over the dog of a man she has been avoiding since her arrival. As the past collides with the present Joy has to piece together exactly what happened in the run up to Jenny's death and her part in it to heal. No matter what she does to keep Jeff at arms length both Jeff and some ghostly presence have other ideas.

A really lovely book about friendship, love, guilt, death all with a hint of the paranormal woven into it.

This story if it had a bit more of the romance instead of just plodding along with things would have been better. There was no romance and i just wanted to kick joy into touch for being so thickheaded and not grabbing what she wanted. She was in denial.
I liked the last few pages which explained everything.

I enjoyed this story and did not see the twist coming, even though I suspected something was not quite right!

Basically, this is the story of a woman who returns home to be closer to her sickly dad and has to face up to the death of her childhood friend, whilst forgiving her friend and potential love interest.

Some bits of the storyline where hard to believe, but overall it was really really well written and I enjoyed the pace and suspense.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters seemed real and the torture and torment between them was palpable. Loved the story line. Would definitely recommend. A worthy 5* rating.
