The story see's Joy moving back to her roots years after an accident that killed her best friend Jenny. Joy buy's the house that Jenny and her family used to live in and a lot of strange incidents start to occur. The storyline has a mystery/suspense feel about it and even though the few twists towards the end didn't knock my socks off I still enjoyed the book.
The relationship between Joy and Jeff is enjoyable to read and they are both likeable characters that you soon start to care about.
If you like a book with suspense/mystery but on a slower scale I think you will enjoy this book, certainly made a nice change to all the fast paced thrillers I've read lately. Will certainly keep my eye out for more by this author.
Eighteen years before, these three were a team, high school friends, on the edge of adulthood, still fresh, lively and full of promise. Jenny and Jeff seemed the golden Prom Pair. That is until a crash badly injures Jeff and kills Jenny. Joy is elsewhere that night and remains so in her head, she can't truly remember what happened, a switch clicked in her brain and she effectively wiped the terrible memories of the time. She only succeeded in hazy emotional recall; Joy has an unaccountably heavy load of guilt to bear she just can't shift and an inexplicable feeling of fear whenever she thinks of Jeff. They are parted from that time on. Stuck in the sorrow she was so damaged by, Joy has made up her own explanation for what happened and she knows whom she blames.
Circumstances change, Joy has to return to her family town, as her father is terminally ill. In her absence Jeff has settled back as a geriatric specialist and is taking good care of the dear old chap. Joy is now a Dr. too, a vet, and she has short term plans for her immediate future that don't involve Jeff. The past will not go away though and meaning must be teased out from some very strange happenings. Here Edie Claire strikes a fine balance between the believable, practical likelihoods and the proffered pointer - an intervention of stored up supernatural forces.
A real mystery unfurls and the story sweeps you up into what becomes a crime. Well named Officer `Ox', another old school pal does his best to protect Joy and solve the problems but there remains a strong twist and surprise, one that lifts this `romance' into another genre. An American tale, written fluidly and easy to read, only slightly irritating along the will she won't she line, I enjoyed Joy and was happy to be in her company for the time it took to tease out the plot. As to Jenny's influence, well I can accept that, a perfectly plausible possibility, in my book.
A really lovely book about friendship, love, guilt, death all with a hint of the paranormal woven into it.
Basically, this is the story of a woman who returns home to be closer to her sickly dad and has to face up to the death of her childhood friend, whilst forgiving her friend and potential love interest.
Some bits of the storyline where hard to believe, but overall it was really really well written and I enjoyed the pace and suspense.
