Thinking that I may have damaged the bulb while fitting it I removed it and the cracked glass fell away completely.
I took a second bulb, again enclosed in a plastic surround; I inspected it carefully and found no damage. I then inserted it into the table lamp being extremely careful not to grip the bulb too tightly or to over tighten it and this time the complete candle glass came away from the metal base. I am reluctant to try any of the other lamps as I consider them unsafe and not fit for purpose, the surrounding glass is very thin and delicate. I am returning the bulbs for a refund.
Update Oct 2013 sorry to say all these bulbs are beginning to fail. Periodic use in the hall ceiling rose and wall lights over the period. Not impressed and certainly not long life.
One blew after 2 weeks (probably on for about 3 hours a day) and one blew after a month (again, probably on for about 3 hours a day). I replaced one with another from my pack of 10, and the other with a conventional type (bought from Poundland). So now the third halogen has blown. Meanwhile the Poundland one is still going, as are the other 8 conventional blubs that pre-date my purchase.
For brightness, they are slightly whiter than conventional 40W types, and ever so slightly dimmer (hard to say, and that's with them alongside each other). They do look good. Also, so far they have blown "without fuss". I find the traditional ones sometimes cause the circuit breaker in the fuse box to trip.
I'll continue to use them until the pack runs out. Can't be bothered to return them given the cost and hassle. I'll update my review if my experience changes. But based on the first 3 bulbs out of the pack, they've averaged 90 hours each. On my electricity cost, that means they save 16p during their lifepsan. But conventional ones last much longer and cost much less. So you're out of pocket.
I've rated 1 star because they simply do not meet the promises made.
