One of my all time favourite albums from start to finish. Mix the Stones with Springsteen, cut out the nonsense and add in some country/folk touches and you have one the finest albums ever recorded. I have the original on vinyl and upgraded to CD a few years ago.

Great tunes, great lyrics, atmosphere, feel and great playing too.

Maybe 1985's 'Scarecrow' was the album which elevated John Mellencamp to superstar status in his native USA but 1987's 'The Lonesome Jubilee' still remains musically and lyrically his boldest work.Featuring nine other musicians playing no less than 23 instruments including dobro, banjo, congas, hammer dulcimer, fiddle and penny whistle 'The Lonesome Jubilee' is a strong, rich, textured album. The main themes throughout the album are the hopes and aspirations of working class, blue collar citizens of the US,particularly the mid-west where Mellencamp was born and resides.
The album begins with 'Paper In Fire' an uptempo, brassy opener while 'Down And Out In Paradise' is simply about the struggle of a single mothers' everyday life. The first single from the album 'Check It Out' is about the disillusionment of being a family man,he goes on to hope that 'future generations riding on the highways that we built have a better understanding'.'Cherry Bomb' is a nostalgic tale of growing up but remembering back to a time in one's life when 'holding hands meant something'.
'We Are The People' is about hope and optimism in a cold cruel world.'Hard Times For An Honest Man' is about what the title states whereas 'Hotdogs And Hamburgers' is a tale of injustice and forgiveness.'The Lonesome Jubilee' is in a nutshell a series of short realisic tales concerning life, love, hardship, hope and survival. It is at times melancholic but overall it is a deep,warm,folk-rock record which in my opinion John Mellencamp has never bettered.

This is the guy who opened on the 2CD Bob Dylan tribute album, I was really impressed with that performance and went looking for some of his music. I picked this CD; I ws lucky! A truelly exceptional album. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys American music

This is my second favourite album by John Mellencamp, who had to keep adding the nickname `Cougar' to his own, since his first manager had forced him to start under the name Johnny Cougar in 1976! This LP was one of his most successful worldwide, with 4 singles released from it. I love most of the tracks; my very favourite is `Empty Hands' **** co-written with JM's friend and long-time collaborator George Green (now deceased): it has a subtle pathos to it, it pulls at my heart everytime, it sounds as if it is going to go upbeat and rise, but it remains just under the surface with a desperation that is perfectly understated, if not by the words, by the tune and the folk violin.
The overall sound or genre here is folk rock with a variety of traditional instruments such as mandolin, banjo, dobro, dulcimer, fiddle, harmonica, penny whistle, accordion, melodica, autoharp, claves, cowbell, tambourine... and surprisingly a saxophone too. You could say it was the fashion at the time, but here it is perfectly crafted and does not sound over-produced or fake. The previous album in 1985 was a rock album containing many songs about the social problems facing Americans, especially in the countryside, it was full of anger and disappointment. With this one, JM raises some more global issues I feel; in other words people around the world could and did relate to it. I grew up in Continental Europe and English was not my native tongue, however this album really got my heart beating stronger at the time. Moreover, it has aged well, it is still very warm and loving, full of compassionate ideas springing from all the disappointed lives Mellencamp describes in his songs. Yes, the lyrics are uncovering some tough experiences, there is hurt everywhere.
