I should also mention that I found it especially useful to combine taking the phrasebook with me along with learning a smattering of the language with some CDs beforehand. Knowing a bit about how French sentences work allowed me to adapt the phrases included in the phrasebook so that I could have something more like a chat when I was over there - and being able to do that really made my trip! For this I used the Learn French with Paul Noble course which was very helpful in showing me how to put my own sentences together. Combined with this excellent phrasebook it proved to be a very powerful combination.
A recommended purchase!
My only real gripe is that I would have liked a larger section on verbs, but perhaps that's not what this guide is about. It takes the time to tell you how the -er, -ir and -re verbs work and then only gives you one of each to use. Surely the point of these regular verbs is that once you understand one you understand a thousand, therefore a page listing common -er, -ir and -re verbs would have been great for confidence building.
