Top customer reviews
I have previously travelled in Malaysia many times. I recently travelled to some new locations by bus, train and plane. I was looking for a guide that would give me a quick headstart as I already know the country pretty well. I had hoped in Lonely Planet tradition, they would at least provide me with a quick rundown on the sights, practical information and orientation. The short story is that it wasn't useful at all.
Seems to me that Lonely Planet are trying to grab a bit of the 'glossy pics' travel guides market a-la-DK EyeWitness, but failing badly. This title provides you with a superficial level of information that might seem OK at first glance, but when you are on-the-ground is actually pretty useless. It misses the information you really need, is at times inaccurate and fails to give you the inside track/headstart - worse still, it has few maps of any use (this is actually a major whammy) although the Singapore coverage is better. It lacks substance and is the worst of all worlds.
My advice? Either buy a glossy book like the DK ones if you are looking for pretty pictures, or buy a proper travel guide. Give this one a miss. Failing that, buy a simcard and google the info - this book is not worth buying or the weight worth carrying.
Not bad for swatting mosquitoes with. That's about it.
