We're going to Australia for a few weeks and lonely planet guides are always the best I found. I'm actually Australian (!) and found this book extremely useful for information regarding travelling around Australia.

I bought this for my brother who is spending a year in Oz. The book is full of useful, up to date advice (this is the most recent version at time of writing Dec '13). There is a useful map, info about transport, places to stay and lots lots more. If you know someone going travelling to Oz you can't find a better gift. He hasn't put it down and was clutching it as he went through the airport! We all had a read and found out some useful facts.

The trouble is that Australia is such a big place with so much to do that it is difficult to encpsulate it all into one book. We found the book useful but used other sources for more in depth information about local attractions.

By Squirr-El HALL OF FAMETOP 10 REVIEWER on 18 Aug. 2015
Format: Paperback
This 1112-page book - the 17th (print) edition of November 2013 - is an interesting and readable guide to the island-continent of Australia. This is a well-designed and presented guide, with useful maps. This is not a glossy guide with lots of colour pictures, but it is a well-designed and laid out guide, with colour used sparingly. It is intended to be a helpful guide to things to see and do, and not just a list of things to see and do.

It is broken down into four major sections:

Page 6 - Plan Your Trip:
This section is an introduction to Australia, what to look out for (Australia‘s Top 25), what you need to know in advance, and other important touristy stuff.

Page 61 - On the Road (“The Guide”):
P062: Sydney & New South Wales (with 14 sub-sections and a fold-out map of Sydney inside the back-cover)
P256: Canberra & Around
P274: Queensland & the Great Barrier Reef (16)
P473: Melbourne & Victoria (12)
P618: Tasmania (13)
P710: Adelaide & South Australia (14)
P807: Darwin to Uluru (9)
P901: Perth & Western Australia (14)

Page 1027 - Understand:
This section has articles on local culture - history, environment, food & wine, etc.

Page 1063 - Survival Guide:
A-Z Directory, transport, etc.
P1095: Index

Excellent, comprehensive travel guide covering the whole of Australia and real value for money (purchased for £8.00).
The book is a little old being the 2013 edition and a new one is due for release in Nov '15 - but as we're going before then this book will do just fine.
Particularly like the itineraries section - will be using these for inspiration when planning our travels.

I used Lonely planet for all my trips for the last 5 years, I understand Australia is a massive country and the trip I will do there cover lots of different places, but when I get the guide book I found all the places I am planing to visit but with just little information about them, so I had to do my research online to fill up all the missing information, such as transports links...which I think are essential. so yes lonely planet is this time it fail me or simply is no worthy to cover a whole country such as Australia in only one guide book.

Im going to Australia in August and needed a book to give me a bit more info. This book is rather large and is just crammed with info, however its not laid out very well making it harder to read and find the certain information you want and a bit boring to be honest. I did get some useful information from it but its not enough. It has lots of links, hostel addresses ect.
