They give you a lot of tips on how to travel around, what to expect, they mention little know facts or places, and give a thorough background on history, music, food, language, all of which contributes to a deeper understanding of the country and the people you are visiting.
Other guides show you a lot of pictures on glossy pages, which is nice if you are travelling with your imagination, however for actual travelling the LP guides are unbeatable, and this one about South Africa is no exception.
If you are on a package holiday I would save your money for your holiday as most of the information will not be of use to you and will probably be told to you by your guide anyhow.
One last piece of advice is don't buy a publishing version older than 2 or 3 years, a hell of a lot can change in that time, hotel names etc as I found out once.
This particular guide I bought second hand for my holiday in 2016 in South Africa, It was an organised tour 17 days on a coach, as a result I hardly opened the book, there was more than enough information given by our tour guide, not a great loss as I got it for a cheap price, but a lesson learned, keep the money you would pay for it for a couple of cold beers on your holiday ;-)
