Lone Traveller: One Woman, Two Wheels and the World Kindle Edition
'You don't have to be twenty, male and an ace mechanic to set out on a great journey. I've cycled round the world twice now. I'm not young, I'm not sporty, I never train and I still can't tell a sprocket from a chainring or mend a puncture.'
So speaks Anne Mustoe in the opening to this fascinating record of her second epic journey cycling around the globe from East to West.
Using historical routes as her inspiration, Anne followed the ancient Roman roads to Lisbon, travelled across South America with the Conquistadors, pursued Captain Cook over the Pacific to Australia and Indonesia and followed the caravans along the fabled Silk Road from Xi'an to Rome.

Amazon Review
Mustoe's strict girls' school background is evident in her rigid planning and seriousness. She revels in solitude, dining by herself or watching TV after a long ride, and describing a "good night out" as attending a ballet alone--although she breaks her Girl Guide demeanour slightly when staying in China's cheap-and-cheerful gated lorry compounds or sharing a joint in a Byron Bay backpacker hostel.
Lone Traveller will be useful to anyone contemplating a foreign bicycle trip. Mustoe explores the pros and cons of cycling alone; dealing with police; tacking tough terrain; and the peculiar maps which neglect to depict whole mountain ranges. She includes her packing list and documents the varying reactions to a lone women cyclist--bewilderment in Brazil; house arrest in China; hero worship in sporty Australia. Although informative, it doesn't have the same spontaneity or spirit as Josie Dew's classic cycle diaries Travels In A Strange State and The Wind In My Wheels. Mustoe's rambling style is innocent and unembellished, both the book's joy and its downfall. While some will find Lone Traveller heart-warming and inspirational, others will tire of its matter-of-factness.--Sarah Champion
Review
it's a compelling read, detailing the experiences of a rather curious traveller. ― Independent on Sunday
Her wry sense of humour is one of the great charms of Lone Traveller. ― Daily Telegraph

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 May 2019She makes it sound so easy. Just start pedalling, without any training, and go round the world. Easy going with so many interesting meetings and descriptions of where she is. I have ordered two of her other books. Very human contacts with locals who were so kind to her.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 July 2004Anne Mustoe is an inspiration for anyone contemplating a long voyage on a bicycle. She chose to cycle alone on a bicycle through what must be some of the most difficult places.
The book is informative and enjoyable. There is enough detail on the logistics and practicalities of such an endeavour to answer the questions any reader may ask. She remains optimistic in circumstances that many others would find difficult and always finds something good to say about the simple or difficult conditions she faced - particularly the warmth and hospitality offered by many people she came across.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 June 2013The more common questions about traveling are often consented around the practical aspects of cycle touring rather than the journey.
This is not the usual travelogue.
In this book, contained within separate chapters, are the ins and outs of dealing with the situations you might encounter within any country.
By no means a definitive guide but more a nudge to use common sense based on what you have observed and therefore anticipate.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 June 2017I have read and loved Anne Mustoe's books for years - from her first adventure - this is a collection of episodes from various expeditions and includes some hair-raising stuff. How sad but appropriate that she died while on her travels - a life well spent indeed - a truly original individual.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 May 2020Whether you’re a cyclist or not, Anne Mustoe’s books take you - with wit and warmth - into her world of travel and adventure.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 January 2014Anne Mustoe's books are gems. They all contain her scholarly knowledge, her enthusiasm, her curiosity and above all, her capacity for getting on with all sorts of people. I was at her funeral and was most impressed by the character of all her family and friends who clearly adored her.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 February 2004This book is a must for anyone of any age or background, contemplating travelling for an extended period. Full of very practical advice and personal accounts that do nothing to take away the discovery element of travel and exploration but everything to make you want to leave sooner.
Anne Mustoe's book is especially honest and, as previous reviews have pointed out, the chapters do not follow the chronological order of her journey but focus more on using countries and examples to illustrate specific key experiences of the author. I will ask my family to read this before I embark on my own cycling journey as Anne Mustoe reassures, educates and inspires within one very enjoyable book.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 August 2014Bought as a present. I read the book previously and thoroughly enjoyed it. What an achievement for the writer to have branched out so late in life on these escapades all over the world, alone on a bike!

rivu ghoraiReviewed in India on 30 September 20185.0 out of 5 stars A nice approach to a travelogue
Excellent read. It does not cover the journey day by day basis, but rather divides it in different topics like good days, bad days, company, terrible terrain etc. you never get bored while reading this.

If you are at all thinking of cycling round the world, or lesser destinations, then read this book for inspiration, encouragement and technical tips! Loved her first book and love this one just as much!!
JuneReviewed in the United States on 9 February 20144.0 out of 5 stars Another Bike Ride
This fascinating book tells of Anne Mustoes reasons and results of her epic cycling activities over the years. She explains some of the difficulties and the rewards of travelling alone with her bicycle. The people she meets and the countries she visited. I think some of her adventures would be classed as foolhardy today, but through them all she kept to her plans and cycled everywhere she could. Some places like China she had many obstacles placed in her way, but she persevered throughout with tenacity and a will to see the world. I found this book just as enjoyable as her other books, and would recommend it to anyone who travels or would like to have travelled, or just likes to read an interesting and engaging story.

JuliaReviewed in Germany on 18 June 20182.0 out of 5 stars Langweilig...
