HASH(0x8c3ebe7c) out of 5 stars Surprisingly Authentic and Serious Folk/Americana 2 July 2013
By Madeline - Published on
Verified Purchase
I haven't seen the "Lone Ranger" yet, but from the previews it looks like an action comedy much in the vein of "Pirates of the Caribbean" just on horses. Hans Zimmer is even back again to team up with Director Gore Verbinski to write the actual score of the movie. When I realized though that Disney was in fact releasing two soundtracks to the movie--the score by Zimmer, and then music inspired by the movie, I was interested in seeing what types of music would be "inspired by" a comedy western action film.

Surprisingly authentic and serious music actually. I was fortunate to be able to attend Merlefest this year which is one of the largest folk music festivals in the US and founded by the brilliant and late Doc Watson in memory of his son Merle. While there are a range of music styles on this album: country, rock, modern folk and even reggae--they are all grounded in a respectful traditional folk that wouldn't be unwelcome on the main stage at Merlefest. Some of these songs are originals, and some are covers of Americana classics like "Sweet Betsy from Pike."

Grace Potter's "Devil's Train" is an immediate standout with its upbeat acoustic guitar yet old timey gospel inspired lyrics. She certainly does Hank Williams proud. Iron & Wine's Samuel Beam is back with a new single in the form of the lilting and ominous "Rattling Bone" which crescendos to a nice deep bass drum and keyboards. Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek fame lets loose with some excellent fiddling on "Central and Union." John Grant's cover of Julie London's smoky and jazzy "Saddle the Wind" is also a nice touch.

There are a couple of songs that don't work that well for me, but at 14 tracks--it was cheaper to buy the whole album than pick out singles that I liked. However, that may not be the case for everyone. I would recommend listening to the samples to see if particular songs are up your alley before buying as there is a wide range of styles. Still, I would recommend this album as a refreshing and respectful take on a beloved genre of music that doesn't get much mainstream attention.

HASH(0x8cdb239c) out of 5 stars Americana recordings "disguised" as a soundtrack 4 July 2013
By Steve Ramm - Published on
Format: Audio CD
First off, know going in that if you go to see the new Johnny Depp "Lone Ranger" movie, which opened this week, you will NOT hear any of the 14 tracks on this new CD from Walt Disney Records. That's because these songs were INSPIRED BY the film. Yes, it says so clearly on the front cover. So this is not a soundtrack CD. It does not say so anywhere in the 12 page booklet enclosed (which really has no info except track info) but the press release from Disney says this this was the music that Director Gore Verbinski chose to play on the set during the filming to get the actors "in the mood". But he certainly picked some good songs and artists. Sara Watkins, Lucinda Williams, Iron & Wine and Grace Potter to name a few. Williams' "Everything But The Truth" is probably my favorite while Shane MacGowan's take on the trad Irish pub song "Poor Paddy on the Railway", like any Pogues song. Dave Alvin sings about driving in the south on "Lonesome Whistle", which obviously has nothing to do with the Lone Ranger, but it's fun. One off the oddball inclusions, music-wise" is the closer: "Saddle The Wind" by John Grant (whose name is not familiar to me). It's a love song with lots of synthesizers for the backing. Speaking of odd - Iggy Pop does a straight-ahead version the old folk song "Sweet Betsy of Pike". Not bad either.

The 14 tracks run 51 minutes in length and, though none of these really have anything to do with plot of the film, just might introduce some moviegoers to these artists and the "Americana" genre.

I hope you found this review both informative and helpful.

HASH(0x8c3ebdb0) out of 5 stars If youo were not impressed by the movie, BUY THIS! 15 July 2013
By William J. Thibault - Published on
After hearing of the box office 'failure'-don't worry, they'll make it up in downloads and DVD sales-I thought i would check out the related CD's. This one is a winner. If you liked the song compilation form Burton's Alice in Wonderland, this is along the same lines-some established artists stretching themselves:Iggy Pop, Grace Potter, and a bunch of artists that may be established, but are foreign to me. Just sample the music and I think that will give you a taste of the diversity and the flavor of the movie. This one's a keeper. This one shouldn't 'flop'.

HASH(0x8c3e7d80) out of 5 stars Not the soundtrack, but in the movie 15 July 2013
By Cara - Published on
Some of this material is in the movie, but it is not Hans Zimmer and the soundtrack. Rather interesting array of songs; more listening, and it grows on you. The soundtrack itself is apparently only available on MP3.

HASH(0x8c3ed5e8) out of 5 stars Be fair! 19 Sept. 2013
By Chairhunk - Published on
Format: Audio CD
The only negative reviews for this CD so far are complaints about what the reviewers WANTED it to be, not what it IS. Granted, Amazon could provide a more detailed product description, but the one star ratings are unfair. I wasn't a fan of the movie itself, but I was lured to buy this disc when I saw that some of my favorite alt folk and Americana artists--Lucinda Williams, Dave Alvin, Iron & Wine, Ben Kweller, Sara Watkins, and Shane MacGowan--were involved...and I couldn't pass up a chance to hear "His Royal Thinness" Iggy Pop sing "Sweet Betsy from Pike." What I discovered was a very good sampler of new music, and I was even introduced to a couple of artists I'd like to investigate further: The Aggrolites and Pete Molinari. The new songs were worthwhile, and the covers were fun. If you like these artists, you'll enjoy this!
