I really liked the idea as a start. Until halfway I just couldn't stop reading it, I liked how the story of this world slowly unfolded like why the surrogates like Violet are needed and how people fight by all means to get more and more power by manipulating each other and taking advantage of the surrogates. Some happenings seriously turned my stomach... I felt a strong connection with Violet: I know from personal experience how hard it can be to withstand intimidation and manipulation. However, Violet's romantic relationship in the second part of the book is simply stupid. Until that, she seems like an intelligent and strong personality, but every time she sees her love she behaves like a 10 year old in love. By the end of the book I felt like I was reading a silly teenage love story. The end of the book was so badly written that more or less you could find out what will happen, I was bored to read... Will I read the second part? I guess I will because I really liked the world in general. I think the author could have pushed her idea a bit further, at least I would have enjoyed a bit more details of the world as it is before s*** hits the fan...

The Jewel is a well written book with a good plot and good character development. The concept was interesting, if not a little odd, and the plot kept the pages turning long enough for it to be read it one sitting. However, I found the romance to be underdeveloped and the main character quite changeable, despite being strong and generally consistent in her views and emotions. I also found 'the Duchess' to be extremely changeable and volatile, although I'm not sure if this will be clarified later and is deliberate on the author's part.

Overall, a very well written book, but it just seemed to lack 'that something' that would have made it great, and not just good.

This story was not at all what I had initially expected, it was so much more. I was excited at the prospect of a forbidden romance but this story is so much more than that in the best kind of way. I am so invested in this series and cannot write anything more as I am simply itching to one click book two! Amy Ewing has easily been added to my list of favourite authors and I cannot wait to get lost in more of her incredible stories!!!

This book had so much potential- it really grabbed my attention at the beginning (despite the main character being so self-righteous!). This all changed when the romance was introduced- apparently you can fall in love with someone after ten minutes! Who knew? After that it went so downhill- the characters were annoying and the plot unbelievable. I only finished the book because I felt I had to.

Fun, quick and easy read. Really interesting premise that needed more development, the author fell short with the character development and I felt more drawn to the Duchess, a character you are supposed to despise in your sympathy for the protagonist, however I was left feeling sorry for her and intrigued due to the complexities the author gives her. If you want something easy along the lines of hunger games then I would recommend but don't expect too much

I am regrettably no longer a YA. I have read a fair bit of YA fiction, lately, and I swear, during some of it, I could feel my brain atrophy. This isn't too bad, though. I think it's fairly obvious where she's going with the plot, but there is a likeable protagonist and some reasonably well fleshed out characters. I enjoyed it enough to want to read a sequel, when there is one.

It's a fantasy book. I couldn't get into the story, it just didn't seem to be going anywhere. It needed some drama instead of endless descriptions of the place.
