This is a disappointing book and doesn't fit its description as a rolling stock guide. Rather than giving a full and systematic description of all the current stock with pictures to identify different types, it has very short histories of each of the Underground lines followed with a listing of the rolling stock. There aren't as many pictures as I would have expected and there aren't even photos of all London Underground Stock. Apart from their numbers, you won't learn anything about the rolling stock or learn how to identify different types of stock.

This is a very insubstantial book and isn't really fit for purpose.

If all you want is a list of all the rolling stock and the formations, this is the book for you. If not, I'd suggest that you buy another book.

As a successor to the excellent Capital Transport London Underground Rolling Stock editions, this falls well short. Despite purporting to be a Rolling Stock edition, a significant proportion of text and illustrations relate to stations and line histories which are adequately covered in many other publications. Even the Chapter headings relate to Line rather than Rolling Stock type.

Illustrations are generally too small dimensionally to be of much value or interest. eg Many are tighty cropped so that only part of individual cars are shown.

Im afraid this is an opportunity lost to update recent LU rolling stock changes and fill the gap left since the last Capital Transport edition.

What should have been a useful guide has been let down badly by the use of a very light print which is difficult to read in anything other than perfect light. You would think that the publishers would check stuff like this before going ahead & printing the book.

A very pale attempt at the subject matter compared to Brian Hardy's series for Capital Transport Publishing which sadly went out of print in 2002. I say "pale" attempt not only to indicate the poor coverage but also the fact that the printing seems to be greyish rather than black and indeed on some pages looks as though the printer was saving on ink. Annoyingly the chapters are based on Lines rather than rolling stock. Stock list numbers just about suffice in the Fleet list section at the back, but strangely within the Line chapters the car numbers are repeated but grouped in car types, eg. driving motors, trailers etc rather than as unit formations. As mentioned in other reviews space has been taken up by listing the opening dates of each station on each line. I must say I found very little information that couldn't be found in that well known free encylopedia website. It's an opportunity lost and if Ian Allan decide to publish a second edition (which I hope they do) then let's hope for better information, better layout (including typeface) and a better printer !
