Imagine being able to visit all your favourite parts of London and then to re-visit them in other centuries. Luxuriate in the sounds, smells and tableaux of pictures brilliantly brought to life by the author.
The narrative is captivating and makes you want to keep exploring, keep walking around this great city.
It is stimulating, exciting and historically so informative.
Having bought a copy early at the launch, I thoroughly recommend this book as a read not to be missed.
The format of the book is as a travel guide around the different eras of London, from Shakespearean to Medieval to Victorian, describing to the reader what they will see...from well known sights and buildings to the minutiae of the everyday activity and what you as a time travelling tourist could do and see. I loved the style of Dr Green's writing and how it seemed he was a real tour guide talking directly to you. The depth of knowledge and the obvious effort that has been put in to this book is astounding, a truly enjoyable and thrilling read. If you have taken the time to read this review and have even a smidgen of interest in the vast history of the amazing city of London then please buy this book. You will not regret it.
As lover of all things historic it's a real treat, and takes you on a tour of London in Shakespearean 1603, medieval 1390, plague struck1665, Victorian 1884, post blitz 1957, and to finish 1716. It is very descriptively written, and takes the form of guided tours through the streets with lots of interesting facts, and information on the sights, smells and sounds of the day, if you close your eyes and use your imagination you can almost be there. A lovely book to keep and read again and again, it would also make a great gift.
