Product Description

Review

Bryant's images are formally composed, the human form rarely straying into the frame. Yet, with its juxtapositions of old and new, stately and informal, the vivid and cumulative portrait that it provides is still of a living, perpetually evolving city. --The Independent on Sunday

A present for my wife whose first contact in UK was as an au pair in London where she used to walk a lot on her time off. Though her English is good my wife enjoys panoramic and aerial views of the streets and areas she knew just over 40 years ago.
I had thought to buy pictures for the house but I could not make up my mind. Then I chanced on this picture book and another: problem solved. The book has an index of locations but no commentaries geographical or historical. My wife's memories are commentary enough with such high quality photographs.

This huge coffee table book is one that will have you looking through the pages again and again. And the fact that the photography tends to focus only on the architecture and places rather than people means that this book has a timeless quality to it.

I appreciate how there are no words or descriptions getting in the way of the beautiful photos - it leaves you speculating over what you are looking at as you turn the pages. And fortunately at the end, every photo is described and there is even a useful map that points to where the photos were taken.

I believe there are only 5000 of this grand book in print, so it is sure to become a collector's item. This signed, limited edition also comes with a print which is worthy of framing.

The photos are so vivid and realistic, you could be in them. Particularly impressive is the pull-out of a tube station platform.

The photographs in this book are absolutely beautiful. There is a written introduction at the beginning of the book but no individual descriptions of the photographs. Instead at the end of the book is a map of the Thames with the location and identity of each photograph. I bought this book as a present and will soon buy one for myself too.

Richard Bryant's photographs show London as a complex city. The quality of light and detail is astonishing and it is a book that can be revisited many times, as there is always something more to discover in its pages. The depth and scope of the project is really impressive, as is the photographer's range and insight into the panoramas and details of London.

This huge book needs a substantial coffee table to support it. The size allows these wonderful photographs to be seen in their full glory. A truly stunning achievement, which covers all aspects of this great city from the spectacular public buildings to back street "greasy spoons". Fantastic.
