I was lucky enough to download a copy of this for 99p as a "Jubilee Special Offer". What a marvellous bargain, the best history book I have read in a long time. The great joy of this book is that it's a chronologically compiled collection of reportage by contemporary observers (eye-witness accounts in some cases), that spans the history of London from the Boudiccan revolt right up to the London bombings of 2005.

I enjoyed Peter Ackroyd's history of London, but the book that Jon E. Lewis has put together goes straight to the primary sources of historical research, which gives us not only a feel for the political and social context of the events described, but also an insight into the emotions, prejudices and bias of the various commentators. The descriptions of places, people and events that shaped the city (and in some cases the nation), include a wonderful amount of detail, that is often overlooked by modern historians, but which really brings the history to life.

I lent this to a friend to while away 15 minutes, while I was attending a brief appointment, it took me 2 hours to get it back - I had to promise them I'd get them a copy of their own !

So although the "Special Offer" price is no longer available, I still think that this book is a definite "must buy" for anybody interested in the history of London.

Great idea to tell the whole history of the world's greatest city by showing the reader a great selection of the historical documents that have survived and leaving him to draw his own conclusions. There should be more books like this.

This was quite a fascinating read. I was surprised however to discover that half the book was covering things that happened in living memory. When you think about it of course there are more chances and methods now for recording events.

A great account of the history of London. Some accounts are better than others, and some are fairly graphic too, the one about cock fighting in the Middle Ages particularly so.

Some centuries/decades are more covered than others. There are also accounts that some might find too short, while others go on for too long.

If you enjoy reading about he history of London, I recommend this, if you only have a passing interest, I'd skip this ~500 page account of it.

There's loads of information in this book, most of it was new to me and it's facinating to imagine London growing to where it is today.

A good book to dip into.
