I notice other reviews saying that it loses charge over time and is difficult to get enough light to recharge it properly - this is true, but it seems to be just the rechargeable battery wearing out. I have two of these keyboards and have found the battery performance starts to drop after about something like 8-12 months and the keyboard then won't charge as easily. Logitech say the battery is not replaceable, but it is - it's a rechargeable ML2032 button battery (don't put a CR2032 into it) - £3.50 on Amazon. The little battery holder just slides out the top of the keyboard like any other button battery holder. After replacing the battery it's good as new again.
I have two of these so I've got one spare - I tend to spill (black, no sugar) coffee on it occasionally - after which i quickly tip it upside down and shake it out, wipe it clean with a damp cloth and leave it upside down on a warm radiator for a week - it comes back to life properly after about 5 days on a radiator and works fine! done this three times so far :(
Dimensions if anyone needs them: LxWxD = 432x157x14mm (without the flip out feet out - the top is 27mm of the desk with the flip out feet out.
You can have multiple of these keyboards and other logitech devices all connected on the one dongle which is handy.
Then recently when I tried to pair the keyboard with a second unifying adaptor it apparently died.
Skip to now, after some effort the keyboard is not dead but no longer a 'solar powered' device.
Long story short, Logitech's built in obsolescence and has forced me to replace the rechargeable battery with a standard non-rechargeable battery and disconnect the solar panels. I'm looking for a different keyboard.
Short story long;
For some time, weeks AFAICR, the charge status LED on the keyboard had been showing red when the keyboard was switched on but flashed dimly green when the solar button was pressed. The solar app reported >500 LUX and 80-90% battery charge, there seemed to be no other noticeable issues. The keyboard was kept in the living room and connected to a media PC under the TV, so is not heavily used.
The first issue appeared when I tried to connect the keyboard and mouse to another unifying receiver so I could use them on another computer. The second receiver is the one supplied with the Logitech mouse and the mouse connected to it straight away. However, the keyboard could not be detected by the unifying app. Switching back to to the original receiver allowed the solar and unifying apps to see both mouse and keyboard.
The troubleshooting messages for failed pairing suggests that low battery charge could impede the pairing operation and the Logitech K750 FAQ on the Logitech support site agrees.
OK I thought, I need to get the keyboard fully charged before pairing to a new receiver, the solar app was reporting around 90% but the pressing the solar button flashes the red LED indicating low charge.
I switched off the keyboard and left it at the window for the day. The sunlight wasn't great but the Logitech FAQ says -
"Charging time — It takes about two hours to recharge the battery in direct sunlight when the battery charge is used up."
So I thought 7-8 hours should be more than enough to fully charge the last 10% and get the solar button to flash green, I was wrong.
Some googling and the the Logitech support site seem to suggest an alternate cause, existing pairing could hamper the keyboard from pairing with a new receiver. OK so maybe unpairing the keyboard from original receiver, before pairing to second receiver would get me somewhere. THAT WAS A MISTAKE, the keyboard still would not pair with the second receiver and now the original receiver could not find it either. Damn, now I had no keyboard.
Lesson for the day, DON'T UNPAIR THE DEVICE FROM A WORKING RECEIVER !!!
Some more googling, it appears some have had success by replacing the battery but the Logitech FAQ says -
"NOTE: The battery is not replaceable."
and -
"The K750 keyboard comes with a rechargeable ML2032 button-cell battery. It can't be replaced."
WTF! this is supposed to a be an alternative to replacing batteries, bad for the environment as well my pocket. The Logitech answer seems to be, replace the £50 keyboard for the sake of a £4 battery !!!
OK so maybe the issue is that the rechargeable battery has reached the end of its life. The keyboard was out of its 3 year warranty so I had nothing to lose, I ordered a new battery online.
When the replacement battery arrived, I installed it into the keyboard. Some force and a lot of care are required to extract the battery tray from the back of the keyboard without damaging it but it is possible. Search google and youtube to find instructions and videos that demonstrating the procedure.
So, new battery installed, I switched on the keyboard. No sign of life, the unifying app could not detect it and the solar button lit neither LEDs, red nor green. OK so maybe the new battery isn't charged, it was evening so I set the keyboard under a bright LED light (10W LED = 60W standard) for the night.
The following morning I found nothing had changed the unifying app still would not detect the keyboard and the solar button still lit neither LED. OK so maybe the the LED light isn't producing enough energy to charge the keyboard. I left the keyboard switched off at the window for the day, when I checked that evening there was still no change.
OK so maybe the replacement battery is a dud, I can put back the original battery and at least have a working keyboard right, WRONG!. When I had re-installed the original battery the unifying app would not detect the keyboard solar button would only flash the red LED.
Checking the charge of the original and the replacement ML2032 batteries, both showed a voltage around 2.9V, they both appeared to good, or at least as good as each other, so the dud replacement theory seems to be invalid. So I suspect the solar panels are no longer supplying enough current to fully charge the batteries, despite what the solar app says.
More googling, some adventurous souls had replaced the rechargeable ML2032 battery with an equivalent non-rechargeable CR2032 battery and managed to bring their keyboards back to life. The CR2032 battery is fairly standard so I found a pair of no-brand CR2032 batteries for £3.99 in a local high street shop. The voltage of the new CR2032 battery is around 3.2V.
The caveat when using non-rechargeable batteries is that you should not attempt to recharge them, they could EXPLODE !!! So the continuous charging from the the solar panels in the keyboard mean they have to be disconnected. Instructions can be found at ifixit.com - 'Logitech K750 Keyboard ML2032 to CR2032 battery replacement'
I have one comment on the instructions, I'm not sure if my amendment is necessary but I have completely removed the solar panels and the am only using the CR2032 to power the keyboard. I have unsoldered both of the the wires to the the solar panels from the PCB and built a solder bridge between the positive and negative solder pads on the board, effectively creating a jumper where the solar panel used to be.
This has given new life to my £50 keyboard for the sake of a £2 battery. The unifying app detected the keyboard and the solar app shows the battery charge at 100% and the status says 'Excellent', oh and the LUX meter is at 0, there are no solar panels. All that remains to be seen is how long the CR2032 battery will power the keyboard, comments on the ifixit instructions say the keyboard is still going strong after 3 months..
The other issue I have is with the a flawed design of unifying devices is a potential limit of 45 connections. The Logitech support site says -
"Most Unifying devices can connect with Unifying receivers an unlimited number of times. Some Unifying devices have a limit of forty-five (45) unique connections. If you're using such a device with multiple receivers, once you connect 45 times, you won't be able to connect to additional Unifying receivers. The device will continue to work with the last receiver it was connected to."
and
"You have two Unifying receivers: one on your laptop and one on your desktop. You use the same mouse with your laptop and desktop, and switch back and forth between the two Unifying receivers. Because your mouse is switching between two Unifying receivers, each time you connect, you use one of the total available connections. Eventually, you will hit the connection limit"
It is not clear whether the K750 keyboard is susceptible to this limit, Logitech do not appear to have published a definitive list of affected devices.
In conclusion;
After some effort I now have a working keyboard.
It no longer fulfils the criteria I originally purchased it for, I will have to replace the battery.
It may not fulfil my new requirement to have a single unified keyboard and mouse for two computers.
It will hopefully last long enough for me to find another solution, I doubt it will be Logitech.
It's lovely to type on, almost as good as my MacBook Air, and with fairly small fingers, I much prefer this more laptop-type design to work on. It's not back-lit and has no caps-lock light, but I've disabled cap-lock in Windows anyway, so that's not an issue for me. I only hope that once it finally dies (if it ever does!), I can still replace it with the same model.
