    I'll start off with the positives.

    The overall build and weight is decent, it is just the more important parts that seem to be poor which I will explain more about later.

    The feel of this mouse took me a day or two to get used to. I'm used to the top of the mouse either being glossy or matt plastic. I found the rubberised materiel seems to get my hands very hot, but that took simply 2 days to get over, then it was fine and it actually has an advantage as you just can't lose grip of it in the same way as other mice.

    When looking at the pictures, I feared that I would press the switch mode button instead of back by mistake. But it is out of the ideal position to comfortably press, which is sensible as it likely won't be pressed anywhere near as frequently as the other two on the side. The mouse also has a good feature in that you have to press the button once before it allows you to switch to mode 2 or 3 (or any mode for example). Good if you happen to accidentally press it, as it won't instantly stop the mouse functioning with the device you are using. This is one of the really good functions of the mouse. You can easily go from your PC to an android tablet for example with pretty much no delay. I've used it briefly with 2 tablets and in my case it is better with these than my PC.

    The thumb button at the base has a problem for me, but regarding the comfort of it, it is a lot better than the M705. The M705 thumb button has next to no feedback at all when you press it. It always functions fine, but you just can't feel it clicking at all. The M720 has an obvious feel that it has been pressed.

    Regarding the scroll wheel, I don't think this is the problem with this mouse. I am used to having a freewheel one as I've had the M705 for about 4 years and an HP non click scroll wheel for years before that. The M720 feels virtually exactly the same as the M705 in this area. Just a tiny bit more noisy and stiffer probably because it is new. Unlike others I find it easy to do a middle click or the two side clicks separately. I think it is better than the M705 in this area, but it could be because my M705 is old. With that, you have to take care not to click it sideways if those two buttons had any function. As some have mentioned, when in the click mode, this scroll wheel is quite a lot louder than the average mouse. And even in this mode, it has a bit of play in it. If you spin it very fast, it won't stop suddenly, it continues going for a few clicks. But this gives you the ability to go faster too even without the freewheel function. Onto that, probably because it is new and has no dust clogging it up, compared to my M705, this spins for ages if you spin it fast. This sort of function will likely be hard for anybody to get used to. If you've never used it before, it likely will take several weeks or even over a month to get used to it. But I don't think it is a negative point which many people seem to think it is. It was made specifically for this and I think that for people using windows it must be because of a lack of drivers that don't allow it to function right. I saw someone say on a you tube video that until you install the drivers, the freewheel is no quicker then using the arrow keys to scroll down a page. In my case with Linux, it works instantly and the faster it turns, the faster it goes down the page. It does indeed freewheel and will not stop for some time unless you put your finger on it. I am just used to scrolling down pages until i see what i want then manually stop it turning. Very different to a normal mouse, but saves a lot of repetitive flicking of the wheel.

    On to one of the negatives which is the main reason I am going to return this mouse and won't be buying another. I run Linux (Ubuntu). This does unfortunately mean I can't use the Logitech software. I can't have any criticism for not being able to customise the buttons in the same way you can in this program, but what is particularly annoying is what the default function for the thumb button is. Logitech actually say on their site that this mouse can run with Linux as an operating system. If they say that they need to set this button to something else or the same as the M705. The M705 thumb button simply had no function until you went into a program or game and applied it. It was recognised as "AUX3". This button on the M720 functions as the combination of Ctrl+Alt+Tab on the M720 for some strange reason. These controls are often a way to get out of full screen in games. So if you simply squeeze the mouse by mistake, your game can end up doing some strange things. On my M705, I used this button on the games i played for a certain command. When you go to the game settings and choose the controls, games see it as either all 3 or any one of them. This just isn't what you expect from a mouse that is a simple upgrade on the M705, the same button should serve the same purpose.

    Now Ubuntu does have options to disable certain button combinations, but the problem is, I actually think this button has a hardware related problem too. It only functions as Ctrl+Alt+tab for a fraction of a second, even if held down. Therefore you don't have enough time to configure it to be disabled.

    The default functions of some of the buttons of this mouse are very strange compared to the M705 which every button worked independently and the computer saw them as an input on the mouse only.

    Onto the problems that are hardware related. The back and forward buttons are pretty poor. They are very well positioned, but they don't register properly. They almost always do work if you press them and then let go like a normal click, but any press and holding with these in gaming for example, then they are pretty much useless unless you hold them firmly. The whole purpose of a button is that when it is pressed in, it clicks makes contact. It should only stop registering when the click is heard or you feel the release of the button. If you don't put constant pressure on these, then the don't serve this function. I've had so many mice with these back and forward buttons and none are as bad as this, regarding this particular issue anyway. Even the cheapest of mice that have a pretty nasty sounding click with these buttons at least continue functioning when pressed and held until they are released and the click is heard. If Logitech have a program that lets you chose what you want to use the buttons for, then I can see these buttons being poor for most other things other than going back and forward with single clicks.

    The final problem is more of a criticism of them boasting about the advantages of the laser. From my experience of using the M705 from 2016 to buying this just now, I find lasers are far more limited to what surfaces they work on than a simple optical LED mouse. Unless it just down to Logitech being poor in general with this technology. The surface you use either the M705 or M720 on varies the responsiveness of the mouse so much. Using them on my desk which is just made from some wood effect worktop, they are both incredibly sluggish on this and are really painful to use. The M705 has started to have issues with the lazer that I'm not going to complain about too much given its age, but it used to have exactly the same problems the M720 is having now. Neither work on glass despite them both claiming to, which amusingly, Logitech's budget MK250 mouse from the mouse and keybaord combo actually just about works when i tried it on a window. That has a simple optical LED and not this very advanced lazer that both the M705 and M720 have. And this is a budget mouse that I believe will have been on sale over a decade ago. It's pretty old. This mouse also works perfectly on every flat / smoothish surface I have tried. The only area it doesn't work well on is black surfaces for some reason, even including mouse mats. I even have a cheap optical LED mouse from a pound shop, and that is even better than my old Logitech in terms of surface options to use it on.
    I'm not a serious gamer or anything, But I'm really not seeing what the advantages of this laser is. It is fine when on a mouse mat, but worse than a dirt cheap mouse on virtually every other surface. Not what you expect for what you pay.

    Logitech used to make some really good stuff, but now they seem to be cutting down on costs. Making some parts of their mice appear much nicer and making some of the important parts incredibly badly. Even on my old M705, I had a problem that seems to be all over forums. The click either registering as a double click, or not at all. I bought a couple of micro switches for very little money and replaced the broken one and found out that they had used really cheap switches when I looked up the number on them. No wonder it didn't last. I don't think the M720 will be much better if i keep it either. Even on their budget mice from a long time ago, I think Logitech must have used to use far better quality components inside. My mouse from the keyboard combo I actually got when I was a kid and that got quite some abuse. That is quite visible from the marks on it. Won't have been used with care at the time and that still works and registers everything today.

    I don't think it will just be Logitech, but so many brands now are just making things so cheaply that they fall apart inside even when not treated in an unreasonable manner. Not the case with the M720 yet, but has been with the M705.

    I'm not really wanting to trust Logitech any more now for making good reliable mice. But I find their scroll wheel function is essential for me so I guess I'll have to keep trying their mice. Even one of their expensive webcams I bought recently to replace my old Logitech one one had a clear area they had cut costs on despite it being a pretty high end one. The sound was far worse despite the fact it was over double the price and the old one was nearly 10 years old.

    If I want the scroll wheel function, I have no other choice. But I am so disappointed in the direction Logitech has gone compared to many years ago.

    Update 19/05/20:

    Logitech have finally sent me a replacement M720, and it has the identical problem. The forward button on the left side of the mouse is really mushy. It doesn't have a satisfying "click" to it. I am now certain there is a problem with the design of the mouse from the start. The back button on it does have a reasonably solid click on both and at least does register every time on the replacement, even when pressing and holding. But the forward one feels really soft, barely makes an audible click. When gaming, pressing and holding this button won't continue to function unless you really press it firmly. Same problem on both mice. The video shows these buttons vs the M705.

    The other major problem is the thumb button on the bottom of the mouse. Is exactly the same as on the one i thought was faulty. It does a similar thing to CTRL+ALT+TAB, but only for a fraction of a second and it isn't consistent either. Using a program to see exactly what the computer sees this button doing isn't seen as a mouse button. And as it isn't consistent, it also isn't seen as a specific keyboard combination. If it was one of these two, you could disable it. I've had nearly 30 emails with Logitech trying to explain the issue and what they have suggested hasn't worked. For me, this button makes this mouse unusable. It is very easy to accidentally press and a lot of games read it as a command to come out of full screen, which on one or two I play crashes them! I've done a lot of research and I'm not the only one with this issue. What I just don't understand is why Logitech changed the function of the thumb button. The function of it on the old M705 made far more sense.

    Since amazon won’t let me do two reviews (even for separate items) on the same page, I may as well give an update with a review review of the new M705 which I ended up buying as back up in case the M720 failed to work properly, which seems to be the case.

    M705 Review:

    I’ve had the new M705 for a few months now, and I can agree with others, the downgrade in quality compared to the old M705 is very obvious.

    All the plastic feels cheaper, the base has poor skates and scratches very easily.

    The battery cover doesn’t even click into place without leaving a slight gap on one side. Amusingly, replacing that with the old M705 cover sorts that out.

    Unlike the old M705 which you could easily remove the skates to access screws to get inside the mouse, it now seems clear Logitech don't want you to do that. if you attempt to remove them, you will never get them back on. i didn't bother going any further as you probably will find there are no screws this time and they have glued it shut. Probably a reason for making it cheaply - so it won't last as long and you can't fix it yourself.

    Even the batteries are only just held in place. There is next to no tension on the springs at the end and it you lift the mouse up and shake it a little, you can hear that the only thing stopping the batteries falling out is the lid. The old M705 has them nicely wedged in place.

    The right and left click work fine, but if you ever press right click firmly, it sort of goes down diagonally and slips under the left click button and also hits the scroll wheel. Yes, I only end up pressing it firmly in gaming and it isn’t a gaming mouse, but it is just comparing it to the old model which didn’t have this issue.

    The glossy plastic on the right side doesn’t meet flush with the matt plastic on top. Not a big problem, just looses that old premium feel that Logitech once had.

    They removed the bottom thumb button altogether. Better than having it functioning as what the M720 does, but I do miss it and I don’t know why they have is as the same model number with a feature completely removed. I used that a lot when gaming as it was a programmable button on the old one.

    The biggest problem by far with the new M705 vs old is the new laser. While it is much smoother and doesn’t have that zigzag line that another reviewer points out, it has a totally different problem. When you are a gamer or require long movements of the mouse, you often will need to pick it up then put it back down again. When you lift the mouse off the mat or desk, the cursor on screen moved down the screen dramatically. No matter how cheap my mice have been, I’ve never noticed this before. It is as if the laser is diagonally in position. Put the mouse back down, and just before it touches the mat, it will jump right back up. Hard to decide what units to use to measure the distance as it moves the mouse on screen, but it isn’t just a little bit. Say about 5 lines on small text. As you may understand, this is awful when 3D gaming as when you need to adjust your hand by lifting the mouse, you usually end up looking directly upwards, it is that bad.

    I actually found a solution to this. If you buy some mouse skates specifically for the M705 (I found a 2 pack 1mm thick – search “M705 mouse skates”) Putting these on the mouse significantly reduces the movement of the cursor when the mouse is lifted as it is already slightly higher up. I’ve added a picture to show what I have done.

    One positive about this mouse is the only reason I want a Logitech mouse. The scroll wheel is again excellent. All 4 Logitech mice I’ve had with this scroll wheel have been decent in this area, even if not all feeling the same. If it wasn’t for this feature along with the tilting wheel, I just wouldn’t buy from this brand again.

    Despite all these negatives with the new M705, it is useable with the modification i did, it is just noting like as good as the old one once was.

    M705 Update: 27/11/20

    Around 6 months later after buying a new M705, it developed a fault with the scroll wheel. This was an area I noticed many complain about Logitech mice but I hadn't really noticed a problem on the M705. But just in the past few days, the clicking mechanism had become so slack that it was incredibly hard to get it where if you wanted on a specific location on the page. Google maps for example was horrible with this. You let go and it basically toggled backwards or forwards one click. You couldn't rely on it. Was a nightmare for gaming and I'm not even a serious gamer.

    I received a replacement from amazon and this shows how truly dreadful the consistency and quality control now is at logitech. The scroll wheel feels like it is a different design. In the freewheel mode, it no longer spins freely until the momentum runs out, you can hear it has something that it is rubbing against so it doesn't travel anywhere near as far. Anyhow, this does make it a little easier to be precise in this mode which always was difficult before. However, the ratchet mode is worse than the one I just returned. The clicks feel reasonable, but you can never guarantee that when you let go that it won't toggle up or down a click. Same when you are simply scrolling down a page. I would probably say when doing that, at least 1 in 30 clicks ends up sending you the wrong direction. When gaming, selecting weapons with the scroll wheel for example is incredibly difficult. There is so little tension in the clicks that if you just want to go back 2 weapons, you have to thing to hold the wheel in place, feel it click into position, then incredibly carefully lift your finger off, or it will spring too far. This is a very similar problem on a brand new M705 as for what I returned the old one for developing. My old old M705 that lasted 4 o so years still has a working scroll wheel that is perfect regarding the freewheel and ratchet mechanism. I just am baffled at the inconsistency during the manufacturing process.

    Another problem is the right click. Both the left and right click sound different. The right click is so sensitive that you can barely rest your middle finger on the mouse without clicking it. The back and forward buttons work fine, but compared to the video i show featuring the M705 I returned, this sounds similar to the M720. The forward button is very very mushy and is has next to no sound or feedback at all. At least it always works though unlike the M720.

    Just where is the consistency in this brand? I've had 3 M705 mice and 2 M720s. Only one has been fault free for a number of years and had a decent life. I expect the latest one I've received to go wrong or to just become to tedious to use because of the sensitive scroll wheel and right click.
