However, it is one of the best gadgets I own - if you are prepared to take the time and effort, the rewards are yours for years to come. This is my third Harmony (they've been around many years now). I would note neither of the previous two have failed - they both gave years of reliable service. Being heavily used, they just got a bit old and tired looking and I find myself looking at a new, shiny model! That means, over time, most of my AV equipment has changed as I went from video-recorders/analogue TVs to Freeview to Freesat, to DVD & then Blu-Ray, to a PVR and so on. So one of the things it may be useful to know is that the lengthy setup time was needed just once, all those years ago. I've long since worked out precisely and exactly how I want my buttons to react and changing one piece of equipment now only takes 5 or 10 minutes. For instance, I recently changed a dead DVD/HD recorder into a Freesat PVR. I think it took under 5 minutes to modify my Harmony. The buttons I use regularly I ensure are are all in the same place (for me, that's stuff like "Subtitles" and - especially - a 10-second rewind & a 30-second fast-forward). It also means my learning curve on a new piece of equipment is very brief, as my remote therefore works the same way and I know where the buttons are in my sleep.Read more ›
I had looked at the competing One-for-all remote, but it seemed their software was just as clunky at Logitech's and I would have to start programming the commands from scratch. If, on the other hand, I stuck with the Harmony, then the software would allow me to copy my settings over from my old remote. So bearing that in mind, it was an easy choice to stick with Logitech.
...Well that was the theory at least! When using the Harmony's replace remote function I found out that while it would copy across the activities (Watch TV, Watch a Movie, etc.) it would not copy across any custom buttons (such as a DVD players' angle and subtitle buttons for example). I can't understand why not, but at least I wouldn't have to re-do it all right? Wrong! Upon trying to re-program in the custom buttons I kept on having the software display the error message "Unable to Display Content", then all the settings I'd just entered would be lost. Going by Logitech's user forums and internet searches, many other Harmony users are suffering from the same issue too.
I tried multiple suggestions from the forums, but none of them fixed the issue. In the end I bit the bullet and created a new login and reprogrammed the remote from scratch. Thankfully the "Unable to Display Content" didn't resurface. So in summary, don't buy the remote because of the easy upgrade path (the cake is a lie).Read more ›
In summary if you can set up a home cinema amp then you will get this to work. You can use the downloadable software that allows more complex programming or the more user friendly online software but not both. If this puts you off then obviously you could get a "savvy" friend or relative to do the set up. The good thing is that once set up if the unit loses its settings you just hook it up to the PC or Laptop and re-sync over the web.
