I first heard this album in the 70s. My brother borrowed it from a friend and allowed me to listen to it. I was mad keen on reggae music at the time, but this added a whole new dimension to the music.

Loch Ness Monster if issued nowadays would have been called hardcore reggae. The lyrics although not immediately offensive on deeper analysis have much darker meanings. The Hole, well I'll leave you to work out what that is about. Barbwire, referring to the contents of someone's underwear, once again I'll let your imagination dwell on the meaning.

But it is not all x-rated. Songs like Man from MI5 by the Upsetters is classic early-70s reggae and Black Scorcher by Des All Stars would have been an excellent dance floor filling tune.

You get the bonus tracks with the album, most of which I had never heard before buying this album but were a welcome addition for me. Anyone who has a passion for reggae music of this time must have this in their collection.

I have the original of this on vinyl without the large number of bonus tracks. Perhaps they are worth having I don't know, but the original album is a truly awful mess of slack and corny lyrics. Some of the music underneath is quite sound but you won't be able to get past those words - from terrible screams on the title track, the awful uninventive repetitive drivel of "the hole", "barbwire" and several others. Get some U-Roy, Burning Spear, Big Youth, Augustus Pablo, Bob Marley, Misty in Roots, Dennis Brown, Freddie McGregor and a hundred more decent artists instead. Just don't waste your time with this.

Essential to any reggae collection? You must be joking. I'm posting this review so that I don't accidentally buy it in my old age!

In my humble opinion this is the best reggae compilation ever. Especially if you dig King Horror.
