Product Description

Forged from glaciers and sacred to Native Americans, the mountains, boulders, and rocks of the Alabama Hills mirror landscapes found all over the world. A scenic three-hour drive from the Hollywood sign, this location would prove to serve as the place to make movies. Early Hollywood studios sent location scouts to the area after hearing stories shared by travelers, and the rest is movie history. Over 500 films have completed shooting here, including silents, A movies, B Westerns, serials, sci-fi, film noir, television shows, and commercials. Tom Mix, Errol Flynn, John Wayne, William Boyd, Clayton Moore, Lucille Ball, Roy Rogers, Natalie Wood, Humphrey Bogart, Steve McQueen, Russell Crowe, Jamie Foxx, and many more have all scrambled amongst the terrain in the Alabama Hills.

HASH(0x89f500d8) out of 5 stars A GREAT READ... GREAT COLLECTABLE!!! 23 Oct. 2014
By filmaddict - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I purchased this book because I recently took a film class in college, and became interested in films from the silent era through the
1940's. I had never heard of this filming location but decided to order the book. I am so glad that I did! The Alabama Hills has been used for filming from the silent era through now. The photographs were absolutely stunning, and have really led me to become even more interested in some of the early film actors that I had not previously discovered. The book also provides some fascinating information about the locations, movies, and background information on the productions. I really enjoyed the personal photographs and experiences from the author. Well worth the read!

HASH(0x8ac09d20) out of 5 stars Great Book and Great Photos 21 Oct. 2014
By Western Fan - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book is a must read for all Western Fans. It is obvious from the writing and photos that the author is very well versed in film history in and around Lone Pine California. He also has a clear passion for the locations and stars that made those amazing rocks legendary. The Alabama Hills deserves this wonderful book that gives a great overview of its long filmmaking history. Hope to see more Westerns coming out of there again someday soon.
