This soundtrack (along with Ry Cooder's for Paris, Texas and Ennio Morricone's for Once Upon a Time in America, to name two other examples) is the kind of music that CDs were made for. Some of it is so delicate, so quiet, that it could disappear underneath the rumble and noise of a vinyl LP. You'd never know this was the score to a comedy--even a gentle wisp of a comedy like Bill Forsyth's picture. Some of it could pass for Scottish- flavored ambient music by Brian Eno. "The Rocks and the Water" seems to rise up like the tide with electronic calls that suggest the music of whales or dolphins. The sound of the sea whispers behind several atmospheric tracks, but Knopfler's guitar is also featured up-front some of the more overtly melodic tunes. The overall impression is luminous and evanescent as the Northern Lights. --Jim Emerson

This is simply one of the best soundtrack albums you can buy, and, remarkably, is just as good if you haven't seen the film.

It's beautiful, atmospheric music which is nevertheless very enjoyable and showed us another side to Mark Knopfler's music.

There's one (very enjoyable) vocal track, by Gerry Rafferty, but the rest of the music is instrumental, with some ethereal, almost classical themes.

One Australian TV channel played 'Stargazer' over the awful footage of the Challenger Space Shuttle, and the music had such beauty and dignity that it seemed most appropriate.

There's not a dud track and the closing Local Hero Theme is one of my all time favourite pieces of music.

This is one of the most moving albums I have heard in a long time. My personal favourite is 'Wild Theme' for its sheer beauty and calm. It takes you right back to nature and the finer things in life, it reminds you of loved ones you remember, old romances and anything that warms the spirit, so listen to this track especially, and just try and say that you didn't cry at the end!

This music made a beautiful film ever more beautiful.
Every time I hear this music reminds me of my homeland and like the ending of the film, it makes me think of what I miss about Scotland.

Some of my most loved sounds on this CD. Not keen on the jazzy tracks but I have the ones I can listen to over and over. Buy the film and then I'm sure you will want to have the CD to re play the tunes. Absolutely wonderful relaxing sounds. I did think the run ins were quite long and very quiet.

If you are into moody, stately and varied music, this is the Soundtrack that will totally engross you and the Themes stay in your mind long after you've stopped listening. It's also one of my fave movies! Wild theme, Theme From "Local Hero", the wonderful song with Gerry Rafferty is a plus, as well. Knopfler mixes Folk, Rock, Jazz and movie music with enough abandon to make it a " not-so-predictable" Soundtrack. Hope it comes out on a SACD or DVD-Audio. Buy it on any format as it is one of the best recorded Soundtracks in recent memory!

I first heard this incredible music almost 30 years ago when I worked at a cinema in Leicester Square London, we ran the premier of this film and the music has stayed with me since then just listening to these haunting melodies conjours up pictures and memories of the Scottish highlands I would recomend this fantastic cd to anyone.

The whole album is fantastic - melodic, smooth, atmospheric - simply one of the best pieces ever written. If you have not seen the film please do so - not only do you get the great music but an uplifting story and marvellous scenery.
