To calculate the charging time the battery capacity must be divided by the charging rate and so is dependent on the batteries you require. The charging rate for AA is 1.2v DC 1800mA (1 battery), 900mA (2 batteries), 450mA (3 batteries) or 450mA (4 batteries) and for AAA is 1.2v DC 900mA (1 battery), 250mA (2 batteries), 225mA (3 batteries) or 225mA (4 batteries). This is a studily built battery charger. It states what it is doing onthe left hand side in a tiny window. It tells you it's charging, or if there is a fault with the battery and if this is the case it will show you which battery. It shows where the battery is in the machine and gives readouts for all.

It will charge AAA and AA sizes.

I purchased this because we have a good little one but I bought a pack of AAA batteries and did not try them until we needed to open the new pack. Then they were showing charged and there was nothing in them. Didn't know if it was charger that was faulty so thought I'd better buy another but different one - and it's always best to have a spare one. This new one told me that all 4 batteries in all the slots were faulty. You can try and foot it by changing their places but it finds the faulty one.

I was looking for a replacement "Smart" charger to replace my dumb one as some of my Ni-Mh re-chargeable batteries are starting to show signs of failing, I decided on this charger based on reviews alone.

What I have actually been sent is the Fast Alkaline / NiMH Intelligent LCD Battery Charger model - http://www.lloytronuk.co.uk/llyzc/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=468_849&products_id=4628

..... This model comes with an added added bonus, it also claims to re-charge standard non-rechargeable alkaline batteries up to 10 times.

Dubious by this claim I gave it a go and put 4 used non-rechargeable Alkaline batteries in the unit. It identified one of the three as "damaged" so I binned that one (Big Tick for the Intelligent function) but it went ahead and re-charged the other three. Bloommin brilliant! This charger, combined with the battery recycling box in my office means a plentiful supply of fresh batteries for years to come. I have yet to give it a go with my normal re-chargables, but im sure it will be just fine!

Excellent charger. It should save money and the environment

This device charges alkaline batteries a number of times, up to 10. It's smart enough to charge batteries individually at different states of discharge. It does not charge NiMh or LiPo batteries or any other kind of conventional rechargeable battery. However this is not the point of the device.

The charger caters for both AA and AAA batteries. It's construction although plastic is sturdy enough, but it's still plastic. It has a flip down cover that would be easy to break and if frankly pointless apart from a styling point of view. The power lead is separate and of the figure of 8 style with a UK plug on the other end. When you first get the charger be sure to plug it in properly.

All in all, this should save me a significantly money on batteries and it should help the environment too. Overall I am very happy with this purchase.

Great design, fast, flexible. Recharged all my AAs and AAAs in a couple of days.
Needed to lever batteries out with a biro cap, as firm fit, but otherwise excellent.

After 4 months, unit display would occasionally flash green, stop charging. Wiggling the power cable would do the trick but I didn't feel able to leave it unattended.

After 7 months it's unusable. Display flashes constantly and I get sparking from power cable. I am applying for a refund.

A new design but is it any good?

I had a previous Lloytron battery charger and was very pleased with it. I purchased this one as I often have to recharge several batteries at a time since so many items these days rely on rechargeables. What a disappointment this so called intelligent charger is. I put in four AAA batteries, plugged it in to the mains and the LCD came up with chg showing it was charging. After about five seconds everything went dark which is the indication that charging was complete. I put the same batteries into my old Lloytron charger and this time every thing was ok and three hours later the AAAs were recharged correctly.
I don't know if the new design charger was faulty or not but from my experience I cannot recommend it.

Works as long as the battery has not been allowed to go flat

The way you should use this is to recharge the battery before it has gone flat, otherwise it will only reach about 1.3-1.4 volts, and not last long. Used in my mouse batteries, I can easily triple the life of the batteries by swapping out the batteries weekly and give them a top up. Similar low/medium power usage devices would I think be the same.
Normally Alkaline batteries are not meant to be recharged, so do not expect them to be as new when recharged, but the benefit is the voltage of a rechargeable battery is 1.2volts, not 1.5volt for an Alkaline.

I bought this so that I could move onto rechargeable batteries as opposed to ordinary batteries. It seems to charge the batteries OK but the batteries are very hot when removed from the charger. I hope this is not a sign that this product could be a fire hazard. I'll keep my eye onit.

I ordered two of them to charge 2400mah NiMh batteries, the batteries were not completely flat but had been heavily used in a camera flash. The chargers are quite light and for the price really good value. They are quite neat and small with nothing required other than to plug it on.

The charging time for 4 batteries took just over 4 hours, so the posted 1 hour charge time is slightly misleading.

I am happy with the chargers but in hindsight should have spent more and bought a genuinely faster charger, the best ones I have used are the 15 minute energizer chargers (no longer available) and the more expensive 7DayShop ones, which are £15-20 however charge a lot faster.
