I'm sitting at my desk typing away at this review while basked in a bright white glow of light from the lamp. It's exactly what I hoped for, a natural white light that shines to all the corners of my desk. I'm a night owl gamer who rarely opens the curtains and has no need for the whole room to be lit up when all I need is my desk visible to grab a drink when not killing zombies or saving the world. The dome disk cover placed over the LED's gives just enough shrouding to dull the brightness where it doesn't blind me to much if I look up at it. Compared to the spotlights I have in my room as the main source of lighting the LED's produce significantly less heat and are just warm to the touch.
Something I didn't expect but rather like was the lead providing power to the lamp doesn't connect directly into the lamp. Instead the lamp has about 4-5 inches of lead coming out of it with a small socket on the end, about the same size as a stereo jack with a female socket. The plug is connected to another lead with the male connector and connects into the female end connected to the lamp making it a lot easier to deal with plugging it in when the gap at the back of the desk is very narrow. Thus instead of a plug you just need enough space to fit the finger sized in-line on/off switch.
I'm now thinking I may never need to open the curtains again and rarely if ever use my spot lights now I have this lamp.
The LEDs can't be replaced though, but I've had no problems so far and it seems well made so I'm sure it will last several years with no problems.
It doesn't take a lot of space on the desk or vertically, and looks very smart. It has a decent length cable which is split a little way along, so you won't have any problems plugging it in through a tight cable-tidy.
Wow, yes this lamp is tiny by comparison to the old anglepoise, but that's not too much of a problem. The light is a 'cool' white but easily bright enough to illuminate the whole desk which is 2.5ft deep by 5ft wide. The base is silver-coloured plastic as is the stem mount, while the goose-neck and lamp bezel is metal. In operation the back of the lamp bezel gets warm but nowhere near hot enough to hurt yourself.
My only complaints are that the silver base on mine has a couple of manufacturing defects in it and the two halves of the mains lead do not push together snugly, leaving a 3mm gap of exposed (live?) metal. (To remedy this I have just wrapped a but of insulating tape around it).
I guess it's a little expensive for what it is, but overall I'm pretty pleased with it.
Use it for 1:48 model aircraft making. My desk has to serve dual purpose in a family area, it's small and discreet enough for general use, yet bright enough for modelling when I get chance. it doesn't throw light very far so you'll need it within a couple of feet if you are doing detailed work, but as a general desk lamp it's a good cheap buy. You do have to replace the lamp once the LEDs wear out, but would imagine this will last for years before I get to this point...and it's cheap enough to be "relatively disposable"....ah, the day and age we live in eh?!
