Product description

PETER BJORN AND JOHN Living Thing (2009 UK limited edition 2-CD album set - There was always going to be chatter as to how Peter Bjorn and John would follow up Writers Block. Would they try to replicate their earlier success? Or go out of their way to release a wilfully difficult new album? In actual fact what they have done is a bit of both [and neither] all at the same time. Bolstered by the bands production the first taster of the album Lay It Down which snuck out onto the blogosphere at the end of 2008 is a delightfully off-kilter riposte a jaunty flying-V in the faces of people who thought theyd had the band all figured out with a harsh treated vocal before abruptly giving way to an anthemic full-bodied singalong the sort which will send the masses scurrying to any self-respecting dancefloor on a Saturday night. The rest of the album walks a similar tightrope of melody and mayhem. I Want You! is quite possibly one of the loveliest things they have ever done. And then theres the album opener The Feeling with drums crashing in like waves on a beach heavy distortion vibrating and shards of delicate beauty poking through the carefully controlled chaos. Just The Past is a pumped-up rough around the edges would be disco gem and Im Losing My Mind is by turns angular and heart-swelling. And if that wasnt enough theres is the Kanye West-approved official first single Nothing to Worry About a glorious rollercoaster ride of lolloping beats and childrens choirs and the furthest thing from Young Folks you could possibly find. This limited edition comes complete with the Bonus 10-track Seaside Rock CD their limited edition low-key 2008 release which was pretty much the polar opposite of Writers Block: mostly instrumental and filled with beautiful sparse elegies to their isolated childhoods)

Previous to purchasing the album I had already listened to a fair deal of the artist's work, notably; 'Young ones', 'Nothing to worry about', 'It don't move me', 'Lay it down' and some others. On the whole, I expected much more of an upbeat disco-esque vibe as per the songs that i had heard before and was a little suprised to see that there was quite a great deal of variation between songs. This came to me as slightly disapointing at first and I wasn't too keen on some of the less 'progressive' songs on the album or those that seemed less instrumentally solid (blue period picasso, for example). However, after a few more listens I realised that they were catchy in their own respect and often lyrically inventive. The full effect of the album then is a range of vocal harmonising, pop synths and sing alongs that will get stuck in your head. It's pleasent to listen to and though some songs (for me) didn't hold out as well as others, it makes a worthwhile addition to the collection all the same.

Peter Bjorn and John's "Writer's Block" was one of my favourite albums of the last few years. If you are looking fo a repeat performance of that album then you will not like "Living Thing". It's much more experimental and uses synths and percussion as its base. I really like the new direction they have taken. Songs like "Living Thing" and "I Want You" demonstrate this bands ability to write great pop music - albeit in the sugary Swedish-indie style that you are going to either love or hate. If you approach this release with an open mind then you will like it.

If you like Peter Bjorn and John then you should also check out Lykke Li's debut album "Youth Novels" it was majorly influenced by Bjorn Ytlling from the band as he helped write and produce it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a "pop" album like Writer's Block...but a couple of greats! 15 May 2009

Yes...everyone here who said this album is a departure from their previous ones is correct. This album is less pop...more synth...with very little guitar. Lots of electronic beats...quiet songs almost.

When I first listened to it...I 100% immediately found a super mega hit in "I Want You." Everyone I've played it for has liked it instantaneously. It's one of my favorite PB & J songs ever. If you're going to download one...make it that one.

"It Don't Move Me" has a great beat...it sorta doesn't go to any crescendo...but still a good song.

"Why Can't We Stay This Way" is, again, slow...no guitar..but such a good song.

The last song on the album, "Last Night"...also slow..and sorta haunting..but fantastic. Those are my four favorites.

I find that everybody who has it finds a different favorite song(s) which tells me that in the end...it's a pretty good album.

In closing...I'd say this album is NOT better than Writer's Block, but I think it's on par with all their other albums. If you buy it, just know that it's a different experience than Writer's Block and enjoy it for what it is. There is gold here.
5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome CD 29 Mar. 2013

I really like this CD from PB&J even more than "Writer's Block". I think that the tone is darker, but definitely compliments "Gimme Some". Although the sound is a bit heavier, it is by no means a drab or depressing CD, as the lyrics are not gloomy. I think that it is just another layer of personality in the band as in anyone else. It's really worth a good listen if you like this band.

Very good CD. Takes a while to get used to listening but once you do the songs get stuck in your head all of the time. Theh lyrics are a little on the abstract side and not so direct that you learn all of them by the third time you've heard the tracks.
