The daily practice of gratitude will enhance the quality of every aspect of your life, including better health, more fulfilling relationships, and greater financial abundance. This book is the best manual I have ever come across to show you how. I highly recommend it!

It was ok! The book is in two parts. The information about gratitude and what others have said about it is in one part. The second part is a set of activities by month. Some people may find this approach helpful, and certainly better if you are in the northern hemisphere. I don't like to be prescribed to. There are other books on Gratitude that I have found more useful eg these two,Thanks and Gratitude Works! Both by Robert Emmons, are both easy to read and don't take months to finish.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Beautiful Gift to the World 13 Oct. 2011
By Rebecca of Amazon - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
"Gratitude is a feeling that spontaneously emerges from within. However, it is not simply an emotional response; it is also a choice we make." ~ pg. 3

A lot of people have the belief that if you are grateful for your life then you will be happy. "Living in Gratitude" is a book meant to be read over the course of a year. It is a twelve-month journey that includes wisdom from all around the world. Angeles Arrien believes we should make gratitude a daily practice because it improves our health and well-being. She explains how when we look for the good in others we automatically become more compassionate.

What I especially liked about this book is the section on practices at the end of each chapter. The questions asked also could be used as inspiration for writing in a gratitude journal.

Some of the topics covered in this book include forgiveness, generosity, humility, mercy, tolerance, joy, respect, peace, love and wisdom. Also throughout the book Angeles Arrien explains how different cultures express gratitude. She also explains "nature deficit disorder." Don't you feel more grateful when you get out in nature? I often feel gratitude when I look up at the night sky.

"Living in Gratitude" is a beautiful gift to the world. Reading this book made me instantly feel happy. I know that if I practice being grateful it will bring even more happiness into my life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A course in becoming more grateful 7 April 2013
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This is a truly lovely, inspirational, and practical book. It is divided into 12 months and, as others have suggested, it is best used one month at a time as a guide to changing your habitual ways of thinking and reacting to life.

Each chapter includes a prayer, practices, homework, quotes, and tools for assessing your progress. The writing is compassionate and clear. The book's design and typeface are user-friendly, a big deal in today's publishing climate, where the tendency is to squeeze as much text into as small a space as possible.

I enjoyed the author's tone of patience and kindness, as well as her broad perspective and balanced approach. She focuses on self-compassion and gratitude as much as acts of loving kindness towards others.

While this is an excellent choice for someone who wants to deepen their appreciation of life in a more deliberate way, it would also be a great selection for spiritual book groups.

5.0 out of 5 stars Giving gratitude for such a beautiful book! 22 Dec. 2011
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Gratitude is a word that is being used a lot these days, but no one talks about the practice as wisely and eloquently as Angeles Arrien in her beautiful book, Living in Gratitude. I was so profoundly touched by the wisdom she shared that I gave it to all my friends and clients as Christmas presents!

Each month offers a specific learning, practice and blessing that I am sure will change my life as I move through the exercises and absorb the deep and wise teaching she shares. This book is a gem to be cherished and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to open their hearts and give gratitude to the world around them.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great reference guide, and a lovely gift that can be given to anyone 1 Mar. 2012
By Susan Schenck - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
We know that when people thank us, we feel good and want to give them more. Well, it seems the Universe operates in much the same way. Gratitude is one of the most powerful spiritual virtues. It's not just an emotional response, but also it's a choice.

The book begins by defining gratitude, then describes the "four universal portals to gratitude"--entryways to experience thankfulness: blessings, learnings, mercies, and protections. There are four quadrants in our lives in which we can practice being grateful: work, money, health and relationships. Obstacles of gratitude are also discussed.

The book goes on to have a month-by-month guide, exploring themes for each month. Each chapter begins with a prayer (usually of thanks or grace and by a famous person or from a spiritual path or religion) and concludes with reflections, practices, review and integration so that we can internalize and introspect on lessons of gratitude. The idea is not to read the book in one sitting, but over a year. This helps us integrate thankfulness.

The book is sprinkled with stories from various religions such as Sufism, as well as inspirational and thought-provoking quotes from a wide variety of people. It concludes with an epilogue, an extensive bibliography, and a list of discussion questions, some of which would be great in a book club.

One thing I love about the book is that it cites studies. For example, I was amazed to learn of research indicating that couples who express at least a five-to-one ratio of appreciations to complaints stay together, manifesting longevity--whereas those who complain more will likely divorce. Another study showed that those who kept gratitude journals slept better, progressed toward goals faster, exercised more, experienced more positive emotions, and helped others more. Gratitude is important for business as well: a survey showed that thanking customers by phone showed a 70% increase in their purchases.

This book makes not only a great reference guide, but a lovely gift that can be given to anyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just starting off but very thought provoking.... 16 Jan. 2013
By Indiamike - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
While I bought the book in early December, I decided to wait till January to begin the 12 month journey of readings and activity suggestions as outlined in the book. As one in recovery for alcoholism, I find the book flows well into the 12 step program but this book is for everyone, not specific to recovery.
