How It Works
The Livescribe 3 smartpen is designed with the meticulous attention to detail that a premium writing instrument deserves. From the integrated stylus cap, down to the Swiss-made tungsten-carbide ballpoint ink cartridge, we've paid close attention to deliver an experience that is worthy of the title of your new favourite pen. I'm a university student writing 25+ hours of lectures a week, so I fancied something that would help me organise my notes and motivate me because of using a swanky pen. I stumbled upon this after remembering it on the Gadget Show and after weighing up a few other options, I took a punt for the Livescribe 3!
It arrived in the post and I was super excited to use it with my ANDROID phone. But after a few hours of playing, I worked out Livescribe most certainly don't favour Android users. Within my degree, I have five modules, all of which I want in different 'notebooks' within the app. Now I didn't think that was to hard to ask... To be able to write in one paper book, yet have five 'virtual' books. Apparently it is too much to ask for Android however. The app for Android is lacking considerably. You can only really turn each page into a separate PDF which is great if you want to then reorganise those PDFs, but I didn't want that hassle. I tried my Dad's iPod (running iOS8 I believe) and it works a treat, syncs almost flawlessly with EverNote and OneNote which makes life so much easier.
I felt a bit hard done by because this pen claims to work for both Android & iOS, but it seems as if Livescribe kinda got half way with the Android app and thought 'Meh, this will do'. It could be so great! The technology of actually collecting your writing from the page is great!
I did contact the Livescribe support and long story short they told me there aren't really plans to bring the added connectivity features to the Android app. So my journey with the Livescribe 3 came to an end and I was very grateful that I received my money back.
If you have an iPhone, then by all means this could do you wonders. However, if you're like me and have an Android, I just can't whole heartedly recommend this pen.
Its a great product with a few flaws that if corrected would make it a really amazing product.
Firstly I was expecting to be able to OCR my notes and export them as a text document, this isn't really possible. What you can do is view it as a 'feed' and select a sentence at a time for export to a PDF document (which you could copy and paste into a text file but thats a bit long winded). It makes a reasonable job of recognising text but It cant really cope well with my messy writing. I do find it really useful to be able to send diagrams and sketches to colleagues over email quickly.
I do like the Evernote integration and I use this to back up my notes and make then searchable.
The other issues with it are the really poor ink refills that are just horrible to write with (its a pen, so its core purpose should be to write nicely, surely!). I have found a Cross refill that fits it and that solves that problem.
The last issue is the general build quality, the pen cap wont stop on (I have modified mine and it is now a little better) but It doesn't feel very well constructed.
Overall I would recommend it, I think mine is amazing all things considered. But if they could improve the product slightly I think it would be even better. If they do this I'll upgrade to a better version.
What I wanted was something that would allow me to write naturally in meetings without freaking out other people in the meeting room (The previous versions of pen from Livescribe, both of which I've owned, did raise a few eyebrows and caused people to be suspicious you were recording them).
I wanted to write in the notebook then sync my notes to OneNote. You'd think that would be a pretty popular use model. I used to use Evernote, but like many other customers I dropped them when their charges got unreasonable and I switched to OneNote. It turns out that it's slow and laborious if you don't have an iOS device. On iOS, apparently, you can select a notebook to be synced, and that's it. Perfect. (So if you're on iOS, it'll probably work for you). On Android you can share a page - just one page - and pick it up in OneNote. As a pdf attachment, not as a graphic. You can't see it, you have to open it. Atrocious, and nothing beyond what was already implemented in the operating system for them. I don't want to open, export and recapture every page in my notebook!
In summary, the idea of a 'normal' pen that you can capture notes on electronically is great, and the pen itself is much nicer than the old ones. The twist to switch on and extend the nib is a masterstroke (no more taking notes with the pen switched off). But they didn't think about how people wanted to use the output from it. Nobody wants a walled garden proprietary note app (Livescribe+) - there are loads of excellent ones out there. People want to seamlessly sync to Evernote, or OneNote.
And no, the Echo isn't the correct device for that either. The OLED screens die just out of warranty (I had two) and you have to faff with WiFi, which is a pain when you're travelling. It also only syncs to Evernote. A simpler pen that syncs to the cloud via your phone would have been perfect. This does nearly everything you need really well, and then falls on it's face at the last step.
Just one tiny change would have made this great. Such a shame.
