"A Bible for heroes." --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

From the Inside Flap

Plutarch's Lives, written at the beginning of the second century A.D., is a brilliant social history of the ancient world by one of the greatest biographers and moralists of all time. In what is by far his most famous and influential work, Plutarch reveals the character and personality of his subjects and how they led ultimately to tragedy or victory. Richly anecdotal and full of detail, Volume I contains profiles and comparisons of Romulus and Theseus, Numa and Lycurgus, Fabius and Pericles, and many more powerful figures of ancient Greece and Rome.
The present translation, originally published in 1683 in conjunction with a life of Plutarch by John Dryden, was revised in 1864 by the poet and scholar Arthur Hugh Clough, whose notes and preface are also included in this edition. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

The Dryden translation remains clear today, and Plutarch remains as interesting and as relevant as ever. This isn't a fast read by any means, and I often found I got the most out of it by reading a life or two at a time, but all of them are worthwhile, and Plutarch's attempt to draw morals from the lives of greats is well worth the effort.

This is an excellent reference book and very worthwhile: parallel lives of prominent Greeks and Romans seen in parallel or individually, it does not matter.

This translation by John Dryden may seem old fashioned and in a way it is. Yet it somehow adds an extra flavor to the antique texts. It is not as easy to read as any other contemporary translation of Plutarchus' work but it has a feel of being close to the original script and the original way of understanding what Plutarch meant. A native English speaker will not find it so difficult to read as a foreigner, yet it is definitely worth the effort.

If you are into ancient Roman history this book and volume I are excellent, however, I am not into ancient Greek history and found the information confusing without some chronological reference. Apart from my pettiness everything else is fine.
