Filmed in the spectacular surroundings of the Arena di Verona, a Roman amphitheatre originally built in 30 AD, this concert from the summer of 2011 sees Deep Purple joined on stage by a full symphony orchestra for performances of all their classic tracks. Deep Purple remain one of the finest hard rock bands on the planet and are undoubtedly at their best when performing live. Here the orchestral arrangements give an added depth and range to the familiar songs and the band respond to both playing with the orchestra and performing in such a historical location to deliver a brilliant show in front of a huge and enthusiastic crowd. TRACKLISTING: 1) Deep Purple Overture 2) Highway Star 3) Hard Lovin Man 4) Maybe I m A Leo 5) Strange Kind Of Woman 6) Rapture Of The Deep 7) Woman From Tokyo 8) Contact Lost 9) When A Blind Man Cries 10) The Well Dressed Guitar 11) Knocking At Your Back Door 12) Lazy 13) No One Came 14) Don Airey Solo 15) Perfect Strangers 16) Space Truckin 17) Smoke On The Water BONUS TRACKS: (1) Hush (2) Black Night

They also play the songs that Ritchie wouldn't. When I saw them first and they played Pictures of Home and later When a Blind Man Cries, I was apoplectic. Two of my favourite songs. The set varies more regularly than in old times and is always fresh.
This DVD simply captures them on top form combining with an orchestra obviously having a good time. To see a cellist playing at breakneck speed and headbanging to Highway Star is a fairly amusing treat. Add to all this, the most amazing, beautiful venue and you have a great gig. I so wish I was there. The Romans did not build theatres with poor acoustics so the sound matches the performance. All in all a great DVD. Is it as good as Perfect Strangers? Not quite as that's from when mk II were temporarily friends enjoying playing together. But it's so close that the difference is paper thin.
If I have one criticism, and it's very annoying, some of the songs were missing from my disc. Or so I thought. The encores are accessed through a separate menu from the main show. One of the worst ideas ever ideas for recording a show. However, now you know, you're forewarned and won't want to send back a faulty DVD as I was about to.
I will play this again and again. And, I don't care who's playing, I want to go see a show at this venue before I die.
