Recorded at the historic Olympia Theatre in Paris in November 2001, Live in Paris is Diana Krall's first live album. Krall is backed by a quicksilver combo of bassist John Clayton, drummer Jeff Hamilton and guitarist John Pisano and her jazz heritage comes through loud and clear on this programme of standards, ballads and bossa novas. On Peggy Lee's "I Love Being Here with You", Bob Dorough's "Devil May Care" and Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me to the Moon", Krall's snappy, post-bop piano playing shows off her debt to Nat "King" Cole and Jimmy Rowles. Her cool contralto vocals are illuminated by the Orchestre Symphonique Europeen, under the direction of Alan Broadbent on "Let's Fall in Love" and on "I've Got You Under My Skin", with guest conductor Claus Ogerman. Krall's deep take on Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" is a great choice for an encore, and the CD concludes with Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are", a studio track from a film called The Guru, with tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker and bassist Christian McBride. This collection only hints at what Diana Krall has to offer in the future. --Eugene Holley, Jr

Diana gives us both the light and breezy jazz and the haunting ballads we have come to love. Long time producer Tommy Lipuma has done the impossible here by bringing us up close to Diana and these great musicians. From the very beginning of this recording we feel like we are ten feet away from the stage at the Olympia ouselves, able to hear Diana whisper. It is a joyful recording full of respect for the music itself, which is indeed terrific.
You can see from the list above the great mix of jazz and pop standards, but what Diana does with some of these songs you simply have to hear for yourself to truly appreciate. Claus Ogerman is here as are Anthony Wilson on guitar, John Clayton on bass, and Jeff Hamilton on drums. Diana gives us a playful and laughing atmosphere to this night beginning with Peggy Lee's "I Love Being Here With You" and moving through the marvelous "Let's Fall in Love" and "Indeed I Do".
Things turn romantic (this is Paris, after all) when Diana slows things down and turns her "Look of Love" into a sensual song of longing with her emotional voice. Things turn back to breezy again when she does a version of "East of the Sun (and West of the Moon)" that rivals Sinatra and Tommy Dorsey in it's greatness.Read more ›
Yes, it's gorgeously recorded, the band are technically perfect, Krall is in fine form, but the question still remains - is it art or craft? On the basis of this album I'd say finely-polished and exquisite craft for the most part, but there are enough hints of the real art and passion beneath to make it fascinating and to make one hope that sometime Krall will make an album of jazz that comes from the heart rather than the head. Sometimes passion needs to prevail over taste.
This recording is very strong, vibrant and swinging like her concert performances.
Nearly all the tunes are done with a brilliant rythum section.
The group in its own right is very pleasing to listen, even without the singing.
Diana Krall's piano performance is particulary good, rating along the the best ever artists to play jazz piano. As time goes on,the quality of her piano playing continues to improve from an excellent beginning level.
Fast orchestral arrangements are used for "Let's fall in love"
and "I've got you under my skin".
Diana Krall has previously recorded most of the songs present. They are now presented with the added vitality of live performance in LIVE IN PARIS.
Particulary welcome are the new additions of Joni Mitchell's "A case of you",which Diana Krall has had very strongly favourable reaction to her concert performances over a number of years, and a studio recording of Billy Joel's "Just the way you are",which is due to appear in a movie soundtrack.
This CD is dedicated to the memory of her mother who has recently died from myleloma.
I recommend purchasing this CD without any hesitations.
To the reviewer who thinks she's the best jazz pianist in the world, though,I'd recommend they listen to Keith Jarrett, who certainly has that distinction.

Brilliant. The only problem is forcing myself to stop listening!Published 7 months ago by Amazon Customer
A couple of good songs, but overall disappointingly bland versions. CD arrived promptly and as advertised.Published 9 months ago by ajl
