Review

For Genesis fans the world over, this year's 'reunion' tour either fulfilled dreams or left them feeling distinctly short-changed. There's an undeniable schism between those who hold the Gabriel-era years as the band's apogee and those who either came to them in their later, commercially successful, period, or just weren't bothered. Leaving all this aside, Live Over Europe at least attempts to placate both camps, containing as it does a fair smattering of earlier gems amongst the 'hits'.

Covering an age-defying 23 dates in the space of five weeks, Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford (joined by old hands Daryl Stuermer and Chester Thompson) were never going to be a shabby bunch, musically speaking. This is, after all, still prog, even if it manages to rein itself in for singles such as ''Turn It On Again'', ''Land Of Confusion'' or ''Throwing It All Away'' (a truly underrated piece of pop glory). Covering material from Selling England By The Pound to We Can't Dance (what, no Calling All Stations?); the band manage to cherry pick just about everything the crowd wanted to hear while shying away from the more gauche excesses of, say, a 20-minute ''Supper's Ready''. Still, one can't help wonder at the somewhat snide decision that went into choosing to perform what was ex-guitarist Steve Hackett's defining moment on the excerpt from ''Firth Of Fifth''. Old school fans will be wondering what could have been had the 'classic' five piece settled their differences.

Collins' voice seems to have aged well and the playing's as polished as you could hope for. What then is slightly mysterious is the production. Nick Davis' mixing perhaps strives too hard for audio verité in capturing the sound in all its echo-ey, stadium-filling glory. While good as a live souvenir for someone who was at any of the gigs, for anyone who wasn't it just sounds a little too muddy and undefined for music this dependent on the skills on offer.

Still, for anyone who saw the spectacle, Live Over Europe will make a fine end-of-year souvenir to find in his or her Xmas stockings. --Chris Jones

5.0 out of 5 stars as great as you would expect from Genesis 14 Nov. 2007
Format:Audio CD
Genesis have come together for the first time in many years. Those of us who were fortunate enough to see the gig at Twickenham will recall a balmy evening, blessed with wonderful light ; even the walk home afterwards seemed less painful than usual. Genesis played a generous set, from many periods of their long career, and it was delivered with the same verve as in the days of yore. I was so enthralled that I went off and saw the same gig at Madison Square Garden, New York. The quality of sound on this recording is unparallelled, considering it was a live gig, and you get the full set in the correct running order. Highlights are too many to enumerate, but Mama always entertains in an eerie way, while the drum duet between Chester and Phil, played apparently on barstools, is technically brilliant. The finale, Carpet Crawlers, was partly the reason why we all left the arena like lambs (pardon the awful attempt at humour).
This cd is a rare treasure and we await the DVD which is available in February.

4.0 out of 5 stars I Know What I Like 29 Nov. 2007
By Crazy Bald Heid VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
This was a pleasant surprise. Firstly, cards on the table time I am a fan of Genesis up to the self titled album of 1983. I am not a fan of MTV era Genesis and this kind of clouds my judgement.

The sound on this live recording is as you would expect terrific, rounded, good bass and lows end drums. The set opens with a blistering "Dukes Intro", Turn it on Again is slower than I remember, it lacks a little energy to these ears. No Son of Mine and Land of Confusion are pretty good too despite being from the period where I disowned Genesis.

In the Cage medley like Turn it On Again seems less urgent than the version on the criminally underrated "3 Sides Live". Afterfglow remains a thing of beauty, Hold on My Heart is an ok track done well. Home by the Sea for this reviewer was one of the sets highlights - one of the now rare Genesis epics, well performed. Follow You Follow Me loses some of the warmth it possesses on another underrated album Then There Were Three - but again not bad for a live show. Firth of Fifth misses the Hacket touch, and some things should be done properly or not at all. A masterpiece pared down like a Readers Digest edition of a great book. Shame.

Mama stands up well, I can imagine it would look great on that amazing set in the cd artwork. It's as big and percussive as it should be. The most pleasant surprise was the inclusion of the sublime Ripples from Trick of the Tail, this performance was precise, the instrumental passage spot on.

Now for the bad stuff. Throwing it All Away isn't bad, just unremarkable. Domino is another latter day epic, but this ones not fit to be mentioned in the same breath as Suppers Ready or Firth of Fifth, I personally find it a little dull - did they really curtail Firth of Fifth to include this?.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mission Impossible IV? 28 Dec. 2007
Format:Audio CD
It was always going to be difficult to produce a set that would please everyone.

Me, I have never agreed with the 'Peter is God' brigade but I do agree that there was a steady and sad decline album after album after Steve Hackett left.

However, I believe that this double CD is the best of both worlds.

Yes, it has tracks from the later albums but they are the 'best of' tracks (that painful piece of rubbish 'I Can't Dance' dishonourably excepted) and the group has striven to give us a good mix of old and new.

If a measure of success is 'singability', then this is without doubt my best of 2007.

I agree with previous comments about drum solos/duets and it is the weakness of this drum duet and the fact that it is there at all that stops me giving 5 stars.

Genesis were on a hiding to nothing before they started this tour, knowing that they would never please everyone, but for me, they have come as close as we could expect.

MOST enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars STILL ALIVE AND OVER EUROPE... 23 Nov. 2007
Format:Audio CD
I was there ! I saw them and I bought the encore serie "In Paris". But this double cd I just received is more... It's outstanding ! Not only it will take you back out there, but you will discover sounds and music you didn't heard at the concert ! Sounds like an 5.1 surround. Phil Collins is at his best, Tony Banks has nothing to prove, he is great, and Michael Rutherford's double neck sounds like cristal. Genesis fans this is a must ! And for those who just discover or missed the concert, rush for this double cd.
Can't wait to discover the "When in Rome" DVD out in February, or, why not, a new Genesis record and, who knows, a new Genesis tour...

5.0 out of 5 stars They've really turned it on again! 24 Nov. 2007
Format:Audio CD
Genesis came out on Tour last Summer playing some of the best live shows in Europe and the USA they have ever done.
This picks the best of the Europe performances to produce a complete concert in setlist order. There is no chat from Phil - we'll have to wait for the Rome DVD for that but we do have a superbly played and recorded set.
Phil is in absoloute top form as are the other members of the band and the set is a great balance of their huge repotoire pulling classic songs from their progressive era and combining with some of their later more commercial classics.
Their producer, Nick Davis had done a great job on this recording giving this CD a really big live sound.
The CD cover is great too and should be a poster!
