Product Description

Product Description

From the beginning, Janes Addiction have thrown the most unique parties in rock, mixing a fierce musicality with theatrical flair onstage. 2012 saw the band, who have always outrageously combined electricity, sex and danger, return to the stage in support of their acclaimed album The Great Escape .

Live In NYC was filmed and recorded in New York City at Terminal 5 on December 29th, 2012 during a special run of North American shows called Theatre of the Escapists with the band performing in intimate venues, most of which are classic theatres. The alternative rock pioneers - frontman Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins - along with Chris Chaney on bass - captured this immersive theatrical experience on tape.

Again, after many years eschewing the live album, Jane's Addiction - who have only released five proper records in thirty years - return with their third full length live release in four years (after 2009's "Live Voodoo" DVD, and 2011's "Live From Vive Latino" which came with special editions of the most recent album), this time, a 2011 concert from New York City at Terminal 5, on 25 July 2011 - not 2012, no matter what you may have read anywhere else. Sure, the music is amazing, transcendental, a combination of aspirational, zen visionary preaching and a deeply broken form of post-metal rock, but sometime between 1991 and 2003, Jane's Addiction stopped being artists who rocked, and became rockers who sometimes did art : here though, the set is taken from a tour called the "Theatre Of Escapists" - a better title for the record than the prosaically dull - "Live Insert Name of City", but only one song, "Irresistable Force", comes from the album : here, Jane's are a nostalgia act, bestrewn to 22 year old glories, always looking down and back, not up or forward to the future. Almost all of the night is given to old material ; only 2 songs are less than 20 years old, and lots of this record is also represented by the same lineup on "The Great Escape Artist"s deluxe edition live bonus CD : making this record a sort of exercise in redundancy, even if this lineup has not been represented with a live DVD before - only four songs are not on the "Vive Latino" CD. In the meantime, "Whores," "Ain't No Right", "Ted", "Three Days", "Mountain Song", "Been Caught Stealing", "Ocean Size" and "Jane Says" make their fourth live appearances (including the exhaustive "A Cabinet of Curiousities" box set which has a 1990 live show). But if you like Jane's Addiction, then you could, and should, love this ; as a record of one night of, a reminder, a glimpse of Jane's Addiction's immense power as a live act that still stand in the top ten bands - out of over a thousand - I have ever seen.

Recorded back in July 2011, three months before the release of their fourth studio album "The Great Escape Artist" Jane's Addiction played the intimate setting of New York's Terminal 5 in partnership with electronic manufacturer LG to show off the use of 3D technology and is not from the bands 2012 Theater of Escapists tour. Now two years later after being shown on U.S TV on numerous occasions, the concert gets an official Blu-Ray release as well as being released on DVD and CD. The band is the Strays/2003 line up of the band with Bassist Chris Chaney once again joining the band to take the place of original member Eric Avery who departed again in 2010.

The band wisely sticks to material from their first two studio releases as well as their debut self-titled live album. The band only include one song off the at the time yet to be released "The Great Escape Artist" in the form of the first ever live performance of "Irresistible Force" as well as "Just Because" off 2003's "Strays" album. The band opens with the brilliant "Whores" which starts after a quick look back at old New York and continuing on with live staple "Ain't No Right". There are also great versions of classic tracks "Ted, Just Admit It" and the classic eleven minute journey that is "Three Days". Both these two tracks feature two scantily clad dancers on stage, one of which is lead singer Perry Farrell's wife Etty Lau Farrell. The guitar playing by Dave Navarro is as brilliant as ever with his distinctive thick heavy funky sound as well as one of the best guitar solos ever in "Three Days" The driving bass and guitar of "Mountain Song" are unmistakable. It all ends with the sing along "Jane Says".
