Having been an Otis Redding fan since the early sixties and with a collection of much of his rcorded output, I based my purchase of this 'live in london and Paris' cd on the 5star reviews it has recieved on Amazon. For a start the introduction is cringe worthy....'give me an O, give me a T...and so on untill G, and then when the band kicks in it dos'nt....it sounds like its coming from a 1960s transistor radio..very thin an distant, even the over amplified voice of Otis sounds very harsh, well I just could'nt listen to it. For a great 'live' buy the 'live at the whisky a go go, thats intimate, exiting and satisfiying.Albeit with a slightly out of tune trumpet.

I first heard some of the tracks on this album on the 1967 Stax LP, 'Otis Redding: Live in Europe' and was knocked out. I was never a big soul fan in the 60s, being more of a psychedelic kid, but this rates as one of the best live recordings by any artist I've ever heard. The guy delivers, heart and soul, backed with equal brilliance by the legendary Booker T and the MG's. Man, they ROCK!
Of the two sets, the Paris one that formed the basis of the 'Live in Europe' LP is definitely the best. Otis and the band sound as though they are having the best time of their lives and the audience responds in kind, lifting the performance to greater heights with every track. If the call-and-response section on 'Shake' doesn't make you want to jump up and boogie around the room there's something seriously missing from your mojo. And after that they kick into probably the best cover version of Jagger-Richards' 'Satisfaction' there's ever likely to be. They take it, shake it and make it their own. Damn, they're good!
And it's not just on the rockers that Otis and the MG's deliver ... they're equally good on the ballads. The word soulful is pretty much defined by this version of 'I've Been Loving You Too Long.' 'Fa-fa-fa-fa (Sad Song)' is another stand-out track with another beautiful call-and-response with the audience. But it's hard to pick out individual tracks for praise when every single one is played for all its worth by a singer and backing band at the very top of their awesome game. I would love to have been there on the night and am grateful to the archivers who've given us the next best thing; this amazing recording, re-mixed from the original multi-track tapes.

I really didn't enjoy this 'historical document' a great deal.

The versions here have a 'sing-along' feel to them and indeed the excitable crowd noises are a bit irritating at times.
Its often nice to hear live interpretations of old faves but in this case I found that after one play I was in no hurry to hear these versions again and went back to the slicker, more intimate and more soulful original albums.

When you cast your mind back to the long-winded history of live albums, you find yourself generally only remembering a select few. We have Simon and Garfunkel in Central Park, The Who in Leeds, James Brown at the Apollo and for me personally, we have this.

Live albums can be a difficult beast to tame, poor quality sound, harsh edits on songs and most importantly, a lack for the listener of feeling like you're there, in the moment, with the artist or band all contribute to generally making live albums something for completists only.

This one, however does not. The late, great Otis Redding manages to, in barely over half an hour. immmerse you in what was no doubt, an incredible gig and tour to be part of. Both gigs on this album are great, however for me the Paris concert just shades it with more tracks and some slightly superior versions of a few numbers.

There isn't really a duff track on either concert to be honest, this was clearly a night when Otis was simply on it, in every respect of the phrase. Personal highlights for me include a quite simply heartbreaking rendition of 'I've Been Loving You Too Long' in Paris. To me, one of Otis's best qualities as a vocalist was how his lyrics appeared so simple when written on a page but Otis was able to make them mean such deep and powerful emotions. He above, maybe any other songwriter in existence, could truly bring a lyric to life and this is perfectly encapsulated in this song.

London concert was brilliant. Paris was truly phenomenal!
Otis Reading was what I would call an 'ultimate performer'. He put his heart and soul into these (and Im sure every) performance.
Watch the BB4 documentaries on him. Mind blowing performances.
(I do hope his estate gets a royalty from his sales, and not just the record company)

Highly recommended.
