Product Description

Product Description

The Pasadena Roof Orchestra celebrated its 40th Anniversary with a sell out concert at London’s Cadogan Hall. This high quality DVD is of the complete show, to which is added some excellent bonus material telling the history of the orchestra. This DVD shows the Orchestra at its finest: a wonderful period stage setting, superbly filmed with studio quality sound, guest artists, the orchestra's own brand of subtle humour and an appreciative audience. There is also added some excellent bonus material taken from a documentary made by Merkur TV in 2010 about John Arthy the Orchestra’s founder. John tells his own story covering the history of the band, and he includes some, until now, unseen footage of the earlier PRO bands. There are also interviews with band members, past and present.

Do be aware that this is a well-made HD DVD of the 40th Anniversary show from 2010. I've read some reviews giving this a low score due to poor DVD quality and it being 30 years old. It is not, and it would seem that Amazon has put reviews for a previous DVD in the wrong place.

This beautifully-shot DVD captures the band in all its considerable glory. Duncan Galloway hosts the evening with a touch of class and good humour and the playing is of the highest order. There are also some lovely guest appearances from retired founder of the band, John Arthy, and trumpeter Enrico Tomasso. I'm a recent convert to the PRO and can recommend their 2010 40th Anniversary DVD without hesitation.

Whilst living in London in the 1980s & 1990s I attended three concerts by the Pasadena Roof Orchestra. The two concerts staged in the intimate Queen Elizabeth Hall were great successes but the orchestra was not so well at home in the wide and rather overwhelming spaces of The Barbican. The DVD of the 40th anniversary concert, staged in May 2010, in the far less forbidding Cadogan Hall, once again captures the atmosphere evident at the Queen Elizabeth Hall and does the orchestra proud with nearly two hours of most enjoyable music. Fronting the show is the amiable singing compere Duncan Galloway, who first performed with the orchestra in the 1990s. The arrangements of the 1920s/1930s of both dance music and jazz standards are good and the solo work is certainly very acceptable. For any person, interested in this particular type of musical nostalgia, the DVD is a very good buy.

In 1999 the 30th anniversary concert was staged at the Open Air Theatre in Regents Park. Once again the DVD is an excellent purchase and if anything the concert programme is even more enjoyable. In fine voice and heading the orchestra is the abundantly enthusiastic James Langton but such is his very entertaining exuberance that the impression is given that the singer is almost carrying the show. At Cadogan Hall, under the more restrained but very professional leadership of Duncan Galloway, the honours are more evenly distributed. Serving as foil to both singers is the accomplished pianist and composer Simon Townley.

Also available is the DVD entitled "Dancing the Night Away". Lifted from a 1970s German television show the DVD was apparently first marketed without the knowledge of the orchestra. On this occasion the orchestra is fronted by the founder and original bass/sousaphone player John Arty. The disappointingly short programme (only some 35 minutes) includes the excellent instrumental "Creole Love Call" and cheerful vocals by John Parry.

Saw this concert on the television and decided that I had to buy this for a friend staying who loved the music and the orchestra. This was his birthday and he loved it. A great DVD.

I gave the DVD as a present to someone born in the 1930s and who listens from time to time to the great music of the 20s and 30s. The recipient was delighted with the gift.
