I bought the cd based on the reviews regarding a book with this live cd but there was no book with mine, I love Elvis though so enjoyed the cd despite the quality of the sound.

A great book, with fantastic concert pictures of the king. The cd is very good too. No regrets buying this FTD book.

4.0 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 Stars: Elvis Entertains Led Zeppelin 18 Dec. 2011
By D.C. Hanoy - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Live in L.A. is based around Elvis' Los Angeles 11th May 1974 performances, particularly the evening show. It contains most of Elvis' 11th May 1974 evening show, plus a rare performance of 'You Can Have Her' from an audience recorded source.

As a complete show for the period, it's decent enough with a standard set list for the time. Pretty similar to the 19th June 1974 show we had with the Rockin' Across Texas 2CD set. The last 3 tracks come from opening night of the tour in San Bernardino on 10th May 1974.

From the opening notes, I could tell the sound quality wasn't the best. Throughout the CD, Elvis' voice is clear, with the bass sounds dominating. Elvis extends 'Love Me' to feature J.D. Sumner's voice and really starts putting out from 'Steamroller Blues' onwards.

A nice touch happened as Elvis begins 'Funny How Time Slips Away', which he starts again while mentioning that Led Zeppelin are in the audience so they (the band) have to get it right. Unlike the afternoon show, Elvis changes words during the 'An American Trilogy' performance which lessens its quality. Otherwise, this routine show is pleasant enough to hear...that is until the 'premiere' performance of 'BIG BOSS MAN' from San Bernardino. This has a nice slow pace that is ultimately SO COOL, that it becomes my immediate favourite track and justifies my listening straight away - what a highlight! The 'bonus' audience recorded track from the A/S in the same venue is nice to have, but at the same time sounds exactly like bootleg sources and appears to have no audio restoration.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Book Is Great But The CD Isn't 31 Mar. 2010
By Kevin Hoffman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Despite the high price I decided to purchase "Elvis Live In L.A." because I'd been pleased with most other FTD releases and because of that high price I knew I'd have something that not too many other people have.

First the good news: The book is great! It's a must-have for any Elvis fan! We get photos from Elvis' 1956 and 57 shows in the L.A. area, then we get some great shots from his legendary shows at The Forum in 1970. The bulk of the book centers on his May 1974 concerts, again at The Forum. These images shows Elvis to be a highly animated, and quite spectacular figure on stage. He has gained some weight since the 1970 shows but not enough to make one think he's seriously overweight or out of shape. Then we fast forward to April 1976, and the differemce is absolutely heartbreaking. These shows at the Long Beach Arena show a hugely overweight, pale and puffy faced man drenched in sweat. The downhill slide is unmistakable. The book ends with photos from his Anaheim show in Nov. 1976. Elvis seems to have partially recovered by this time. He's lost a considerable amount of weight, looks more agile on stage, and gives the impression of a man enjoying himself.

Now the bad news: The soundboard recording of his May 11, 1974 evening show at The Forum is one of the worst in terms of sound quality, that I've ever heard. Both Elvis and the band sound as though they're performing with pillows over their faces and instruments. It's still good enough to be listenable, but I've heard audience recordings that sound better than this. As for the performance itself: it's good but not outstanding. Elvis flies from song to song with almost no interaction with the audience, something I consider quite essential in a Presley performance.

I wish I could have purchased the book without the CD at a lower price. The book is an essential to any elvis fan's collection: the cd much less so.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK WITH LIVE SHOW CD 8 Sept. 2013

This is a beautiful book with photos of Elvis in LA throughout his career from the 1950's to the 1970's. The pictures are stunning, many of them are new even to the most avid Elvis fan. The CD is very entertaining, as Elvis performs in LA in 1974. A very worthwhile, collectible book and CD. I'm glad I bought it.
