I saw this broadcasted on German TV back in 1980. It started a few hours later then scheduled (I became a huge Ian Hunter fan after seeing his show before ZZ Top finally took the stage) but who cares if it enables you to watch and hear this magnificent performance. The show is also available on DVD and that version features the full performance where the CD omits a few songs ("I'm bad, I'm nationwide", "Funky dogs, nast kings", "El diablo", "She don't love me, she loves my automobile", "HIFI mama" and the final encores "Tubesnake boogie" and "Just got paid today") and brings it down by some 20 minutes to just under an hour. Both the video and audio were available before on peer-to-peer networks in a excellent quality but this CD version sounds better, crisper, brighter then any version I heard before (ranging from my original vinyl bootleg to high bitrate mp3 sourced from the re-broadcast). The package is nice, the liner notes give some insight in how a Rockpalast Night works. Conclusion: it is good this piece of history is finally available as an official release but it's a shame that it is not complete.

So what can you say about that "L'il ol' band from Texas" that hasn't already been written? Not a lot - and that's for sure!
I first caught onto these guys when they released their very first (blues) album back in 1970 and have continued to listen to their simple, blues oriented sound ever since and, although there has been nothing since the Mescalero album in the way of new tunes, there has been quite a lot of DVD's released which have proved just how much noise three guys can make, proving that sometimes the whole can make up more than the sum of it's parts!
So what about this offering........well, it starts off a little tenuously, shaky presentation and vocals with the odd bum note, but once we get to Waitin' For The Bus, we are treated to the big hitters from Tejas, Tres Hombres, Rio Grande Mud and Fandango! with Billy, Frank and Dusty proving just how hot (cool!) they really are.
Certainly, if you don't have any of the aforementioned studio albums then, this is a good "Best Of" place to start, but in truth, it's not an essential collector's album either (although they have never really released many live albums during their lengthy time at the top of their trade!) - so a bit of a curiosity really as I am sure that ZZ Top must have far newer (and probably far better) live material available to them for release!
Oh well, be thankful for small mercies and enjoy at full blast!

What I like best about these live albums that are released many years after the event is that there is no fiddling around with them. They sound just as the band did on the night, it's like a top grade bootleg, they capture the whole atmosphere and excitement of the event in a way that official live albums often fail to do. And this album is no exception. Right from the opening chords of I Thank You you know that this is a band who are not going to take any prisoners tonight. It's a whole lot grittier than the album version and things just get better and better from there. The setlist contains most of Deguello and a good smattering of other favourites from that particular era. As the show goes on you can feel the excitement building, the band get tighter and tighter and Reverend Billy just peels off one excellent guitar break after another. So what if the guitar goes out of tune on a couple of occasions, that's what happens at gigs folks. This really is the ZZ Top album I've been waiting for for years. So why four and not five stars? Two reasons, this is not quite up there with ZZ's best albums, which in my opinion are Tres Hombres and Deguello, and secondly, as pointed out in Classic Rock magazine, there was quite a bit more from this show that could have been included (As those who have the DVD will know). Even if they wanted to restrict it to one disc, this only lasts 56 minutes so they could have got another 14 minutes on there. But I don't want to end on a negative note, if you like 70's ZZ this is an excellent purchase, I can assure you when you hear those opening chords to I Thank You you'll know you've made the right decision and you will thank me for convincing you to buy it.
