The recordings used on this 1973 album come from performances at the De Montford Hall, Leicester and the Free Trade Hall, Manchester and feature the classic line-up of Tony Banks (keyboards), Peter Gabriel (vocals), Mike Rutherford (bass), Phil Collins (drums) and Steve Hackett (lead guitar). The 5 tracks included here are all highly respected works from 3 early albums namely Trespass ('The Knife'), Nursery Cryme ('The Musical Box' and 'The Return of the Giant Hogweed') and Foxtrot ('Watcher of the Skies' and 'Get 'Em Out By Friday'). No doubt Genesis buffs will decry the absence of the likes of 'The Fountain of Salmacis' and, of course, the legendary 'Supper's Ready' but, these tracks are to be found on later live LPs such as Seconds Out and Three Sides Live with Collins on lead vocals rather than Gabriel, which makes for an interesting comparison. In my view, this is a very nice and inexpensive way of discovering the early works of Genesis before taking the plunge on the studio albums of which Foxtrot is rightly regarded as a classic in progressively minded circles.

This is the best way to hear Genesis, imho, i.e, live. The versions of songs from their first three albums (discounting, 'From Genesis to Revelation') knock the studio originals into a cocked hat, and those versions, barring 'The Knife, are pretty good to start with. There's a real focus and intent to the band's playing in this set and Steve Hackett's playing is of particular note with its attack and drive really adding to the impetus provided by Messrs Collins and Rutherford. Each of the members are pretty much at the top of their game on this recording - I only wish that the record company had made it a double and included 'Supper's Ready'.
The version of 'The Knife' on this set is great. The difference between this and the original, rather leaden, studio version is Phil Collins, and what a difference! This should be the version that is included on Genesis Complications but, hey, what do I know?

It would be wrong to single out any one group member (though Collins' hi-hat work is lovely) as the overwhelming impression one gets from this recording is that of a band, rather than competing individuals (something I always felt ELP were guilty of) and it is this which makes it such a wonderful record of this era of the band. Yes, 'Seconds Out' is slicker and more grand but this has character and captures them at one of their peaks. If you like any of the pre-Collins as frontman Genesis output and haven't heard this then I recommend you rectify this post haste. You won't regret it!

This is the last Genesis album from their 1970s heyday I bought. I used to think there was little point in acquiring material that I believed would be far better on the studio albums. Instead, it takes on a new lease of life. 'Watcher Of The Skies' was superb on 'Foxtrot' but here it takes on a more vibrant form. 'Get 'Em Out By Friday' was less impressive on 'Foxtrot' and certainly benefits from a live treatment. One of the big improvements is the contribution of Phil Collins. His percussion work is more prominent and breathes extra life into the material. As he joined the band after 'The Knife' was recorded, this track gains the most. 'Hogweed,' being one of their more aggressive songs, lends itself more to live performance anyway. The closing section of this rumbles with power. Probably only 'The Musical Box' doesn't gain anything here, but it's still a worthwhile performance. I know 'Seconds Out' is highly regarded among fans, but I much prefer this.
