If you want to know about the fighters and fights that made up one of boxing's greatest eras this is the book. You learn a lot about Greb the man as well, and I think all the criticisms I've read of this book are unjust.
A balanced view as well; you never get the sense Compton is in love with his subject, though the meticulous detail in which he goes into every aspect of Greb's story shows this was a labour of love.
The prose is not Norman Mailer, but it's written without pretention and ticks along nicely, retaining your interest without seeming too repetitive or dense.
All in all a well balanced, comprehensive account of arguably the greatest fighter of all time. Anyone who cares enough about boxing to be reading this page should buy a copy right away.
A few points about some of the other reviews: One reviewer above noted a watermark as being intrusive. There is a very light watermark on each page but it is only just noticeable and fail to see how anyone could be so distracted by it as to downgrade their review. Another reviewer states that the facts get in the way of the story. I disagree entirely and feel this comment misses the point of the book. It is, by design, constructed so that the facts obliterate the myths which have dogged Greb for decades. Finally, another reviewer writes that he's read three books on "Grebb" and that this one is a disappointment. I call b.s. Anyone who has read three biographies on Greb, including this 700 page opus would know how to spell the fighter's name. He goes on to say that this adds nothing new to "Grebb's" story. I've been reading everything I could find on Greb for 30+ years and found this book full, from cover to cover, of stories about Greb that I had never seen printed anywhere else and backed up by first hand source citations.
In short this is the final word on Harry Greb. Other pretenders need not apply.
I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in either boxing or history. The amount of research that must have went into making such a polished piece is mind boggling.
This is THE book to buy if you want to know more about one of boxing's greatest ever fighters.
This is the 3rd book on Greb that I have read and it stands head and shoulders above the rest.
