Product Description

Product Description

Shocking, flamboyant, over-the-top, always rocking hard: Alice Cooper puts on one of his infamously theatrical rock and roll extravaganzas in this 1979 concert film, shot in San Diego during Alice's renowned Madhouse Rock' tour, in support of the album From the Inside. This concert takes the form of a creepy inquiry into the case of a peculiar mental patient: The Strange Case of Alice Cooper.' Mixing hard rock with a series of set pieces featuring wild costumes and a supporting cast, Alice mixes songs from the latest album with a number of his biggest hits. Favorites given classic Alice Cooper treatment in this benchmark show include: I'm Eighteen,' School's Out,' I Never Cry,' Welcome Tto My Nightmare,' Only Women Bleed,' and No More Mr. Nice Guy,,' among many others

Let me start with the basics. This ships ina digipack which folds out to three panels. There are poor quality clearly pulled from a worn VHS tape) throughout. There is a full page article by William Hogeland which says nothing new or interesting for Cooper fans (and who else is going to buy this?) It's basically a run through of the history of the Alice Cooper. Usual Bio stuff.

The track listing is as follows:

From the Inside
Serious
Nurse Rosetta
THe Quiet Room
I Never Cry
Devil's Food
Welcome to My Nightmare
Billion Dollar Babies
Only Women Bleed
No More Mr. Nice Guy
I'm Eighteen
Black Widow Jam
Wish I was Born in Beverly Hills
Dead Babies Jam
Ballad of Dwight Fry
Go To Hell
How You Gonna See Me Now
Inmates (We're All Crazy)

So, this is the From the Inside tour. Looking at the track listing you're probably wondering how anything can go wrong. The tracks are a fantastic collection of ALice Cooper in his hey day, just post the break up of the infamous band. Every song is terrific in its own right, so this must be a real winner, huh?

Well, not quite. I can live without fantastic audio, since live concerts like this are a rarity. I'm not docking it any stars at all for quality. It's not perfect by any means, but there's another huge issue - Alice Cooper himself. I don't know if this show was near the end of the tour, but for whatever reason, Alice's voice was clearly shot. In fact, there are very few moments where he even tries to sing - the vast majority of the songs are "spoken", sometimes without reference to the actual melody.

I was looking forward to this based on this tour and exciting tracklist. But, the sound quality isn't that good. Although the band plays great, Alice's voice is a bit of a disappointment: after the truly wonderful 'From The Inside' album where his voice sounded great, on this concert he's not delivering his vocals well at all (sounds like he 'short of breath'...). Maybe he was already back to his struggles with alcohol by then - but this is a 'missed opportunity', with so many great songs. As an avid Alice fan you'll have to have this, but it should have been recorded better

Erm...judging by the EXACT set-list, this is surely the audio-version of The Strange Case Of Alice Cooper DVD! Thus, it seems pointless buying this, when, Alice's voice aside, you get the visuals with that. The band storm through the songs, and, actually, I think the problem is... Alice can't keep up with them!!! Still great, though. The DVD, I mean, wouldn't wanna just 'hear' it....

2.0 out of 5 stars Live in San Diego 4 Oct. 2013

I am a huge Alice Cooper fan, and I was actually at this particular concert in San Diego. Sadly, the recording quality is extremely poor. This CD could have been great, but sounds as if it was recorded on a vintage 1979 hand held recording device ...not professionally!

2.0 out of 5 stars poor sound quality 22 Aug. 2013

I love Alice but this recording doesn't cut it. Alice sounds bad, can't reach the high notes and kind of just growls and talks the lyrics.

It's Alice Cooper, so it must be good. Been around before, but nice to see it officially released. Enjoy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Alice Cooper - 'Live In San Diego, 1979' (1-2-3-4-GO!) 20 April 2014
By Mike Reed - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Concert took place on April 9, 1979 at the San Diego Sports Arena. I caught Alice on this very tour - like two months prior to this performance as it was my -first real- concert I ever attended. The Babys opened. Even though I give this vintage Alice Cooper live CD album a four-star rating, I believe that it should primarily be heard with the company of this tour's long-awaited legit release of the DVD 'The Strange Case Of Alice Cooper' (see my review). Sound quality is okay and all - it's just that Alice's vocals were a bit tattered - at least for this gig. Regardless, 'Live In San Diego, 1979' is still worth getting - for (at least) one reason it's the only live performance of his that you'll get to hear Elton John's guitarist Davey Johnstone play with his band.
