I had the good fortune to see Nada Surf in Sydney last year, and they were a very good live outfit, with Matthew Caws' singing, in particular, impressing. This is a recording from an earlier 2003 show, in front of a raucous Belgian audience, and whilst enjoyable, suffers from the same complaints as most live albums i.e. pleasant enough, but you really had to be there. The slightly ramshackle encores "Popular" and "The Way You Wear Your Head" are a case in point - it's not until you read the sleeve note that you realise they were joined on stage by sections of the audience. Unfortunately it doesn't translate well and sounds fairly shabby. The guitar/bass/drums format seems to limit the band as well, inhibiting certain songs - "Hi Speed Soul" in particular seems stuck in second gear (no such problem in Sydney where they had a keyboard player for the whole show which added warmth and depth to the sound). However, there are superb renditions of "Blizzard of 77" and "Amateur", and it's thrilling to hear Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" shoehorned seamlessly into "Stalemate". It's amusing to hear the band's perfect French banter with the audience, something which, along with their frequent French sung songs, clearly endear them to a European audience. In short, a solid, if unexceptional release...I'm off to hunt for an alleged French only live DVD from the "Let's Go" tour!

i had to order this album from France on the day it was released, as well as the Nada Surf - Live Aux Eurockeenes DVD (Excellent Buy). Nada Surf make the most undoubtedly enchanting music that I have heard from a modern day band, and this live CD captures this brilliance. The set is perfectly structured and takes the best tracks from the band's three albums, inlcuding the classics blizzard of 77, popular, the way you wear your head... the list goes on!
Call me biased because they are my favourite band but it's hard not to like Nada Surf. Especially with the friendly laughs in Fruit Fly and Popular, which make Matthew, Daniel and Ira as lovable as the music they make. A good place to start from for anybody interested in Nada Surf and an essential to any fan's collection!

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful Live show from 2003 6 Mar. 2017
By Donald E. Gilliland - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
In my humble opinion Nada Surf are one of THE best bands to have emerged in the past two decades, and certainly one of the more underrated bands in the rock/alternative genre. Songs packed with power and emotion, all built on a solid melodic foundation. Great tunes, and in this live setting --- a show recorded on March 31, 2003 --- during a tour to promote their "Let Go" album, those songs soar and take flight. If you're a fan of this band, you need this one.

The material is all original tunes, save for a snippet of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" that they slip into one piece, and is that a borrowed line from a Cheap Trick song in another tune? That's all part of the fun, and the pleasure, of listening to this band. They obviously enjoy what they are doing, and sound passionate about the process. That makes for great music. Songs that will make you pump your fist in the air, songs that will tug at your heartstrings, songs that make you just want to dance. It's all here. A seriously great live recording, clocking in at 69 minutes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great way to discover a great band 5 July 2005

Shows nada surf being fabulous performers live, because many of the songs sound even better in this live recording than in the studio version.Impressive is Caw`s voice above all, showing the " popular " emo kids that this man can actually sing.Shows too that they`ve permanently toured the world because both guitarist and bassist speak perfect french during the breaks.Recorded in Brussels, Belgium,Europe where they have a loyal fanbase.Includes " popular" played in a way much more indie pop than Weezer-like.

Check out what a good live act is.
