A collection of early live recordings taken before the band achieved commercial sucess. With the exception of 'Tunnel Of Love', the majority of the songs are from the self-titled debut studio album. Here, we find the band as a four-piece, lacking in the rich keyboard textures of later work. Indeed, anyone expecting the high production values and polished recording synonymous with later studio (and live) recordings is in for a surprise. The arrangements are as tight as ever, but the sound here is stripped-down and gritty. The playing is more about feeling than the musical perfectionism that Mark Knopfler pursued later on. His guitar tends towards a bluesy crunch, in stark comparison to the clean compressed tone of much of his playing. His guitar lines embellish the people and places of his songs as effectively as always, but instead of watching ladies from a West End coffee bar, we find him here in a smoky boozer - and he's had a few. Never one for ego, Mark's introductions are extremely matter-of-fact. He appears to be trying his songs out, unsure of the way they'll go down, unsure of his place in the rock world, "...its another kind of stange song..." he remarks of 'Lions'. It is interesting to compare the audiences heard on the early tracks with that present on 'Tunnel Of Love'which was recorded slightly later, when the band had already achieved notable sucess. Fans of the later, more radio-friendly 'Walk Of Life' incarnation of the band need not apply. But if you have ever wanted to hear Knopfler sans-headband, back at his roots, then this is a requisite.

If you like Dire Straits when they were good - ie pre 'Brothers in Arms/Stadium gigs' then you'll like this.

Mark Knopfler's introductions are a little 'unsophisticated' - but the music makes up for it.

This is when the band had soul - Pick Withers on drums - one of the most underrated, talented, pocket-players ever.

Nice recording - all the early classics on there.
