Formed in 1990 by Jeff Barrett (ex-PR for Happy Mondays), Heavenly Records soon built up a happily eclectic roster including St Etienne , Flowered Up and the Manic Street Preachers. Noting the Manc unian indie/dance crossover heralded by the press, Barrett went one step further, organising the He avenly Social, at The Albany in London's West End (later at the East End's Turnmills). This Sunday afternoon club, like the label, dealt in all musical forms--reggae, soul, hip-hop, dance--proving i mmensely popular. This, the first of three Social releases, is a well-chosen mix by the Chemical Brothers, taking in such varied flo or-fillers as Meat Beat Manifesto 's pounding "Cutman", Red Snapper's cool, jazzy "Wesley Don't Surf" and the Chemicals' own hard-to-find reworking of The Charlatans' "Nine Acre Court.Warm"; pulsing and imagina tive, it manages to be merrily nostalgic while retaining sonic relevance. Excellent. --Dominic W ills
