There are a few other songs I would have liked in the set but all in all the choices are good ones.
The camera work and the sound is excellent, but (and here comes the niggle) the lead guitar is too far back in the mix.
There are occasional solo`s that are just not heard at all, most noticable in Luka. An injustice to a decent guitarist.
Having said that, the sound is fabulously delicious - it is still a great dvd and worth every penny. Except for the above niggle, it would have got 5 stars.
Many Blu-rays are a real let down to watch... but not this one! The picture is razor sharp and you really feel like it could have been shot yesterday. Thankfully, the picture quality is matched by the audio which is clear, well mixed and, for once, the bass frequencies haven't been watered down.
And then, almost as a bonus, we also get to see the Phil Collins Big Band at the same venue in 1996. His jazz re-workings will not be to everyone's taste, but there are some great moments to take in from this gig. The sax solo on Against All Odds, for example, is a thing of beauty.
It is a shame that the Big Band gig didn't get the full Blu-ray treatment. It is shown here in decent DVD picture format, but again the sound is rounded and well produced. One word of warning though: Phil does seem to lay into his cymbals every 2 seconds or so. Even though I'm a drummer myself (largely because of Phil!), I did find it slightly irritating.
One minor gripe I have is that there is an excellent, made-for-TV documentary in existence which documented Phil's build up to the 1996 Big Band gigs. It showed how the project evolved from day one and it was interesting to see Phil getting up to speed with jazz drumming and how the project evolved throughout the rehearsal process.Read more ›
Sound on dts sounds clinically excellent but is too full, almost flat. Standard DD sounds a bit quieter but is much more involving, livelier! Phill's voice is much clearer on DD also, great and noticeable difference to the dts mix. Regrettably, that's it.
I already have the Final Farewell Tour (only on DVD) so wanted the full HD experience of a Phil Collins concert, which I got visually, but the audio is shockingly bad. I managed three songs in then had to turn it off. I hope the sound at the actual gig was better than the recording.
Get the Final Farewell Tour in Paris DVD and watch it on a smaller screen or sit further away!
What a band, brilliant.
If they can record sound like this on a bog standard DVD, how the hell can't they do it on Blue Ray ???

Very good concert with some conversation between songs.
