Forest Fire

The first three tracks are from Saturday Live, tracks four to seven are from Richard Skinner, eight to eleven are BBC sessions and the rest are live at the Hammersmith Palais.

This is a great introduction to the early days of Lloyd Cole and The Commotions, an often underlooked and underrated band from the eighties. The session tracks are great, a brilliant look at an up and coming band and the true talent is there for all to hear.

The live tracks really show the true power of the band - the standout track is also the last track on the album, a brilliant rendition of Forest Fire (a song while still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up after all these years).

A great introduction, and if you enjoy this the try Lloyd Cole and The Commotions Vol. 2 and Lloyd Cole (solo) at the BBC. But definitely buy Rattlesnakes the debut album - 80's pop at it's best.

Lloyd Cole has never got the recognition he deserves and this collection of live songs and BBC sessions shows off his songwriting ability

3.0 out of 5 stars Sort of great but a mess ! (see star breakdown below) 1 April 2010

OK, so I'm a Lloyd Cole fan and most all of these songs are from his excellent first two albums with the Commotions - in that you can't go wrong.

However, some of these songs are live in front of a crowd and some are 'live' in a studio with no audience at all and it makes for a bit of an odd mix. Added to that is the repetition of several songs and this seems like an odd package.
Some of the performances are really good, and it's fun having some different takes, but eventually I ended up buying Live at the BBC, Vol. 2 as well and putting contents from the three CD's together to cut myself a real live set which amounts to about one CD. I think that the producers or marketers were supposed to do that, not put out this jumble.
So music = ***** format = ** average about three stars

Fantastic sounding recording of some of the bands best songs. Really talented band and of course the singer/songwriter isn't bad either.

4.0 out of 5 stars four stars. 3 May 2012

I want to balance out the 2 star review. The deleted between song banter may have enhanced these recordings, but I am very happy with the music. The audio quality is good and despite several songs being repeated, this is a welcome release.

2.0 out of 5 stars "Live" at the BBC 31 Mar. 2012
By J. Cassara - Published on Amazon.com

I put the word live in quotes as for all intents and purposes these track could just have easily been studio outtakes. Why it was decided to edit out any between song banter, and which Cole excels, is beyond me. So while the songs are great the overall effect is more like a greatest hits reissue. As it is I'm still waiting for a "real" live album from Lloyd and the gents.

4.0 out of 5 stars nice to have 19 Dec. 2007
By J. Malnar - Published on Amazon.com

I've been a Lloyd Cole fan since his eighties days of (britpop) glory with the Commotions, so I was really happy to get my hands on this album.
Lloyd Cole sounds as good live as he does in the studio, and although the album contains double versions of some songs, they variate slightly and the album is not boring or overbearing (thou 19 tracks is rather much).
I have a few of his other albums (mainstream, rattlesnakes, singles, antidepressant), and this one is my favorite of all.
If you are not familiar with Lloyd Cole, luckily for you Amazon always lets you listen to samples of music - nonetheless, should you have been born in the late sixties / early seventies, chances are you will like the sound, as it is the sound we grew up on.
