This collection of live tracks from late 1990 to mid 1996 captures alice in chains in their most intense, aggrovated and spectacular state of brilliance, and takes the listener into the angry and escapistic world that MTV would never show.
From the opener 'bleed the freak' to the closing 'dam that river', the album is drenched in distorted guitar feedback, crunching riffs and tortured vocals that defy critics of layne stayley in every possible way. A sense of losing perspective is important to feeling the emotion of this record because of the media hype surrounding the so called 'grunge' movement and its rulebook. It is not an exaggeration to say that this album destroys 'muddy banks of the wishka' and decimates it into an incoherant, barley recognisable dust.
He is no more in chains, and will be missed endlessly

This album is pretty good on the whole. Some of the later tracks that were taken from the band's last shows in 1996 are below par, but this is understandable given the issues vocalist Layne Staley had facing him then. The best tracks are the ones recorded in 1993 at Glasgow Barrowlands, particularly 'Love Hate Love' 'Junkhead' and 'Man In The Box'. These tracks are outstanding, with Layne Staley's powerful vocals and Mike Inez's bass making these tracks sound far heavier than the original studio versions. Bleed The Freak from a 1990 Seattle show is also a fine opener to this album, this performance can be found on the rare 'Live Facelift' video also.

Can't say enough about this album so I won't other than some tracks already on music box collection. Probably one of the best live albums I have ever heard -it captures the "being there" sound brilliantly. Excellent production. Only regret was the copy was second hand and jumps on one track. Should have bought new!

This is a great album, it is such a shame that the band is no more (RIP Layne) as this CD shows the sheer quality of their live performance.
Straight from the start with Bleed the Freak it is a brilliant selection of performances. Encompassing all of their albums. Well worth a listen.

Alice in Chains are a great band and i bought this CD based on other reviews stating that the sound quality is good. However, to my ears the sound quality is awful. There is a thick muffled bass drum dominating the sound throughout 90% of the album / tracks whilst the rest of the mix (vocals / guitar) are weak and unbalanced making this a difficult listen. The song choices are great and there is absolutely no issue with performance. Alice in Chains as a band are always worthy of a five star review, as are all the studio albums and MTV live performance. I can only assume that the record company had more to do with the release of this album than the remaining band members, possibly related to contractual obligations.... Who Knows? Very disappointing sound quality.

here we have a lazy best of made up of the bands greatest hits all from live recordings across the bands career.
for the completist its essential for the passer by its not.
it is a good live album as the sound quality is pretty good through out with only a couple of songs suffering from a slight dip in quality.
the obvious choices are here in the form of "dirt" "them bones" and "man in the box" and they all sound brilliant and then on the plus side they throw in the odd "queen of the rodeo" in to convince you to part with your cash!!! sly goats, but its worth it.

I especially like live albums.Usually they deliver a fine retrospective of the band's career.I regret never seeing his band live with Lane Stayley.I saw them live at Knebworth a couple of years ago,but with a new singer. They were excellent on that day.On this set, they play all their best known songs, but for me the live versions surpass by far the studio takes. That is what makes a band really stay in time. The songs are played with great emotion and the guitars sound sublime. If you really want to know how Alice in Chains sound, don't hesitate and buy this album. You won't be disappointed.Alice in Chains know how to rock.
