This is a wonderful series, with the most exquisite detailed illustrations that have an appeal way beyond small children. Certainly boys from the age of 2 should have at least one if they can't get the whole lot. The illustrations capture the children's attention and my boys can both spend literally hours peering at the tiniest details, spotting something new every reading which is remarkable considering the hundreds of times the book is read. I recommend all the series but I think this is the very best and the boys favorite because there is a wonderful double page picture of a quarry loaded with diggers and dumper-trucks, as well as a log-loader, ships and cranes, a background airport and the usual lorries, traffic jams etc. Watch out for the teeny-tiny sheep with the traffic cone on his head.

As other reviewers have said the illustrations are incredibly detailed. This is my favourite of the three we have. There is so much poignancy in the drawings, for instance in one picture where the Little Red Train is positioned for the scrapyard, Duffy is being consoled by Jack. If you look closely you'll see Duffy grasping a thistle with his hand, as he looks vacantly at the horizon. It's little touches like this that make Blathwayt's books a rare pleasure for both child and parent alike.

FYI - my on is 3 years old and studies the drawings for hours on end

This book and all the others in the series are absolutely marvelous in both story and illustration. As you read the story you can describe every detail in the accompanying picture which I found incredibly well done. The story is entertaining, adventurous and yet not too long. My boy and I both enjoyed it so much I ordered the whole series.

All my grandsons from 18months have poured over this series of books all of which have given hours of pleasure. The details are just so interesting to children of all ages and encourage closer observation and then a love of books and reading. Highly recommended! Purchase the whole series and work from the large sized version down.

We love this story! We've had it from the library for at least three months, so I decided it was probably time to buy it! Makes a nice change from Thomas, there's so much going on in the pictures. One very happy two year old.

My two-and-a-half-year-old son adores all the Little Red Train books, and this is arguably his favourite. As usual, the plot is simple but satisfying, and the illustrations are incredible. An astonishing amount of care and detail must have gone into every page, which makes the book a pleasure to read even for a parent doing it for the twentieth time. I should also comment that the story is beautifully written, and the author seems to find exactly the right sound-effects for the Little Red Train as it takes on more and more cargo. Really it's impossible to praise this book highly enough.

The book is also a great inspiration for imaginative play - it's almost impossible not to try to copy the idea when playing with a train set after reading this book, and my son can spend ages making longer and longer trains.

I've bought all the Little Red train books for my son who loves them (he's now nearly 4) and bought this one for my 2year old nephew who apparently loves it too.The illustrations are fantastically detailed, and I still notice new details even though I've read it 100's of times. I would certainly recommend these stories to anyone that likes trains. The little red train saves the day by collecting furniture from the docks, gravel from the quarry and logs from the forest, when the roads are "chaos" and all the lorries are stuck in traffic. Beautiful series of books.

Like others have said, the detail in the illustrations is fantastic - there is always something more to find. The text is good too as it is fun to read out loud. The story is interesting enough because something happens.

All three combine beautifully to make a book that can be enjoyed by children and the adults reading to them. It is about more than one train - the illustrations show a whole transport infrastructure of ships, planes, bicycles, construction vehicles and road traffic in various locations - the city, the harbour, the forest and the quarry. There is lots to explore in this world.

Both my sons enjoyed the Little Red Train books again and again from 2yo to 5yo. I always enjoy reading these stories to them.
