Louis Armstrong

Louis was born in the same place as jazz – New Orleans. He became famous for his improvised solos, unmistakable vocals and scatting.

Throughout his career, he broke down barriers and took a stand for civil rights.

Paul Stephenson

Inspired by the work of civil rights activists in the United States, Paul called for a bus boycott, as The Bristol Bus Company refused to employ black or Asian drivers.

In 1965, the Race Relations Act was passed, and Paul’s work helped pave the way for it.

Thurgood Marshall Drew

Working with his mentor, Thurgood made the case to Maryland state courts against segregated facilities in America. It was the first in a long line of cases they brought to take down legal segregation in the country! In 1967 Thurgood was appointed as an associate justice to the US Supreme Court – he would be the first African American justice.

Stormzy

The first black British solo artist to headline Glastonbury Music Festival. He was instrumental in making grime music more mainstream.

Stormzy is a spokesperson for black empowerment and social justice, and has funded scholarships for black UK students admitted to the University of Cambridge.
