They were just about to start the next phase of their lives-fresh from college, one last adventure before taking adulthood by storm, one night is all it takes to irrevocably change the lives of six friends.
I'm dead on the inside, my heart unbelievably broken.
I've been lost.
So g@ddamn lost.
Six years later, Faith is finally ready to make peace with what happened that night and hopes to move on with her life. Six years later, she comes face to face with everyone involved for the first time since it all went down. Six years later, she realizes what a mistake hiding from these people has been. Never once did she stop to think about what they might be going through and as their situations come crashing down on her, guilt overwhelms her for not being there for them when they may have needed her most. She has a lot of lost time to make up for and a long road ahead before any kind of healing can take place, for any of them.
“I'm realizing how much I don't know about you, Harley. Do my parents know about you and the other guys?”
“Yeah, we've kept in touch from time to time with your parents, checking in on you. I've mainly been the one keeping tabs and relaying information to the guys.”
“So, I've been the inconsiderate a$$h@le who couldn't see past her own grief?”
Even as I write this, I can admit to having a difficult time coming up with the words to describe how much I loved this book and how promising this series looks to be. Emma James does things a little differently than most and that in itself was refreshing.Read more ›
With such a dramatic opening scene, I expected the book to be far more heart-wrenching than it was. That it isn't is a credit to Ms James' skill as a storyteller, taking us just far enough into the future that the pain isn't quite as raw, but still poignant enough for you to feel for the characters. And there's a large cast here - with the story told from each person's perspective. Ms James has woven each person's tale into a seamless narrative, slipping into each character's head as appropriate.
While so many perspectives serve to slow the story down considerably, it also made me care more about all of the survivors recovering as best they can, so I'm definitely going to be following the rest of this series.
This book has both a definite ending and a cliffhanger. One survivor finds a measure of psychological healing, but the rest have a lot further to go before they reach that point. I will admit that there was a bit more sex than I'd like - the bloke in the sex scenes had a lot more stamina than most men, but he did have six years of lost time to make up for.
Maybe the moral of this story is not to make a man wait six years for sex.
No, there's definitely more to it than that. A wonderful, heart-warming story about those left behind when disaster strikes.
