This is a great book. My 3rd grade daughter and I read through it over an 8 week period for homeschool. Filled with character development, intrigue, and rarely heard history of medieval France. My daughter liked the story and she often refers to something that happened in the story even now. The main character is the ancestor of William the Conqueror. It is VERY challenging reading, even for me. There is no way she could have read it herself. In fact, I doubt if most kids under 18 would find this easy reading. I found some helpful notes to go along with the book online.

Wonderful book, but be careful of this publisher

This is an excellent book in character study and I loved discussing with my student the changes that the Little Duke went through on his path to maturity and responsible adulthood. It can be a hard read at first, but stick with it! It is rewarding and fulfilling! However, my low score is for this particular edition by Wilder Publication (March '09). It has no Table of Contents, no chapter numbers, and several typos. I say pay the extra money and get a more useful edition! It will be worth it in the end!

I bought this for my youngest son and he is so pleased with it. It came in speedy even during the Christmas season and was in good condition.
