So, The Little Cockroach… where to start?
Not the wonderful illustration, full of colour and expression, finding charm in the unlikeliest of heroes. Nor the jaunty, rhythmic verse, carrying us breezily through the odyssey with a smile. The friendly, humorous characterisation? Pure cheek and zany mishaps? I mean, these are all great… for kids!
No, what really got me was the message. Before we even start there’s that dedication to her children, “Try and you might, Don’t and you certainly won’t”, rounded perfectly at the end with a thank you to her parents, “…who made me believe I could do anything”.
What we have here is an ode to freedom and opportunity. The world’s a big old crazy place, go out and get some. Explore, get lost, experience. Find your way and make up your own mind – love cockroaches if you want to.
Strong and positive ideas for the next generations.
How great is that?
